Ray asked if there is any cross over between guitar and piano
Richard had questions about this weird progression: E major D major C major
Ray asked if I ever plan to meet up with my Patrons and what is my favorite chord progression
Ray also asked if it's important to learn to read music
Daniel T asked for help building the diatonic chords in the key of C# Minor, and asked about the 7th chords
Julian asked about a practice routine AND asked me about my Fender Musicmaster, which I forgot to respond to!
John asked about planting with your picking hand

That sounds like a good plan

2023-08-14 06:12:34 +0000 UTCThanks Scott! Good idea. I think number 4 will be my main focus for year 1. That will definitely make everything make more sense. I get lots of truck singing in to and from work. Lol. I have a cool portable multitrack recorder βtascam 800β. - for sudden inspiration. And also a small basic production package that I havenβt set up. Focusrite 2x2. Definitely a winter activity. Thanks for the advice, Scott!

2023-08-13 07:13:36 +0000 UTCI like it but I would flip it like this: βWithin the next five years, Iβd like to be able to: 1. Write a song with multiple guitar parts 2. Write a vocal melody, which may involve learning to sing (depending on your singing chops right now) 3. Learn to use recording software well enough to be able to do all these things myself 4. Be comfortable soloing in any key throughout the CAGED systemβ Iβd say pick the ONE thing on this list that seems most exciting (or that will make other goals easier) and make that your goal for the year. All four items might not be feasible within a year, but focusing mainly on one with a dabble in the others for the next year might be more satisfying and focused and therefore less frustrating and overwhelming. Let me know how that sounda

2023-08-13 06:28:01 +0000 UTCGot it. Music goals- 1 year. Write and record a song with multiple guitar parts. And vocals with garage band. be comfortable soloing through out the caged shapes in any key. 5 years. Written at least 10 songs

2023-08-12 03:33:14 +0000 UTCI also thought the meet up question was pretty interesting. Iβd be up for that if enough people planned to attend. My guess is it would take some lengthily planning and a pretty substantial lead time. If enough are interested though Iβm game. If only for a weekend that would be cool too but better if itβs 4-5 days. Scott, do you still live in Seattle?

2023-08-10 23:51:38 +0000 UTCThanks for the pick info Scott. I wondered about those thick ones because I see more and more of them for sale so people obviously use them. Iβve been using much lighter ones and knew I was missing something. Your explanation made complete sense. Iβm off to buy a few now. Cheersβ¦

2023-08-10 23:38:15 +0000 UTCWhat would be the relative minor/major to C#Minor?
Daniel Torres
2023-08-10 18:04:07 +0000 UTCWould adding 7s or 9s to the chords change anything about the key?
Daniel Torres
2023-08-10 17:42:01 +0000 UTCAlso what can the key of c#minor modulate into if that makes sense?
Daniel Torres
2023-08-10 17:12:10 +0000 UTCHey Scott! Could you help me build the 7 diatonic chords for the key of C#Minor? I have a rough idea on how to do it in the key of c major but when it comes to minor chords im a bit confused. Thanks!

2023-08-10 17:07:21 +0000 UTCAnd further...how important is the ability to read sheet music?

2023-08-10 12:13:08 +0000 UTCAlso...what's your favourite chord progression?
D'oh!-Ray-Me
2023-08-10 12:04:32 +0000 UTCAnd... do you ever plan to meet up with your community in person? I know it's difficult - some of us are on the other side of the world. But, hey, it's a question worth asking.

2023-08-10 12:04:12 +0000 UTCHey Scott, I was listening to a song the other day and worked out the progression: All major chords: E D C D, and repeat. Occasionally they will drop the E major and go in to C D C D for a while, but the rest of the song has E major feeling very much like home. But then I actually thought about it and realised that the E major scale doesn't contain C or D chords as those notes are sharped; so I looked through other scales and I just can't seem to find any that contain all three of the major chords E C D. I explored harmonic/melodic scales too but they don't seem to fit either. I would appreciate some help working out what scale these three chords actually fit in to. I shall probably catch up tomorrow, but thank you as always for your help! P.S: You thought I was "HighlyLoosePants" a few weeks ago in another office hours post. I don't know who that is but it's not me and my pants are staying on just fine. @HighlyLoosePants, maybe try a belt; although you may need to reinvent your entire online persona if it works for you!

2023-08-10 08:20:50 +0000 UTCHi Scott, I'm currently trying to learn piano. Are there many crossover points with guitar or are they completely separate disciplines?

2023-08-10 06:15:44 +0000 UTCHey Scott, hope you are well. If I donβt get to join live Iβll rewatch later but could you please address picks? Specifically gauge, material, size, shape, etc. Thanksβ¦

2023-08-09 20:31:25 +0000 UTCAlso - I just want to let you all know that I AM working on new lessons and will get them out soon. It's been a VERY wild time between vacation, followed by getting sick for a week, followed by releasing that new youtube video, followed by a handful of other life events. I'm definitely working on some cool stuff, I am just unbelievably swamped right now. It's nuts. Thanks for your patience.
