There are so many unique stories from this event that I didn’t have space for in the main video. Here are just three (somewhat lighter) stories that I really enjoyed. I’m sure there’ll be plenty more in the comments of the video!
First, there’s this Eyewitness News Report from ABC7NY, which features an account of the blackout. The crew were filming a fairly run-of-the-mill story when the blackout began, and ended up sharing the power supply of their news van so that a mother could power her child’s medical device.
Then there’s the story of Luke Maloney Hall, from a small town in Ontario. The blackout ruined his birthday, with him spending most of the day bailing out water from his uncle’s basement (it flooded due to a failed pump). Despite this, he remembers the day fondly as a time when the community he lived in came together.
And finally there’s the story of this little town in Albany, which has its own power authority – one that feeds power into the grid rather than taking power from it. As such, they’ve gone through several historical blackouts without ever losing power – with the northeast blackout of 2003 being no exception!
