People still panic buying water

People still panic buying water

Comments

I still drink from the garden hose, Brian. I think there is a genuine risk that the city water supply could be damaged in an earthquake. We don't worry because we have a 500 litre rain water tank and a well. (Would boil it to keep my missus happy.)

Ok, thanks for the answer. That's quite a shame. The most valuable resource can be had in unlimited quantity right from home, but people are afraid to use it. That could go a long way toward alleviating some of the stress and panic. Hard enough having to deal with those kinds of advisories. At least to be able to trust the water... You and I drank from garden hoses when we were kids, eh? We're still here. If filters are required, then so be it. There are some that are so fine that you could fill a bottle with lake water and the filters would clean that right up and render it drinkable. As for the toilet paper thing... Was that something, or what? THAT was a true global phenomenon that social psychologists will be studying for a long, long time. Someone will need to write a chapter on that one.

Many of them, including my wife, don't trust the tap water and use special filters or buy bottled water. Absolutely no reason for it, I have always drunk the tap water here and it is fine. Not a lot of logic to be had here, Brian. "Everyone is buying bottled water? I will, too!!" Same thing happened with toilet paper during COVID. :-D

Just a question. On occasion, I've needed to stock some water due to local construction resulting in a shutting off of the water supply. Not much. Just a day's worth. Maybe two. What I do is fill up some plastic bottles that I keep on hand. (Those green, plastic, 2L, Korean aloe drink bottles that are really sturdy, and can be stored or carried easily. I have a bunch of those, and assorted other 4L larger containers.) I'm puzzled by the rush to purchase boxes and boxes of water. Is there anything generally wrong with local tap water? Tap water cannot be stored forever. There is a definite shelf life before bacteria becomes harmful and it needs to be decontaminated. But should the unthinkable happen, whatever water people have on hand will be consumed long before that can happen. Is there some general aversion to this? Otherwise, an ample supply of water is available right at home. It certainly is a good reason to recycle plastic bottles and put them to use for emergency situations. Thanks, Ed.

In the Tokyo area for sure. In this area it is just the earthquake warning that has already been lifted! The panic lingers a while. :-)

This time it's the typhoon warning?

JB

So it was basically potential earthquake jitters.

Same reason they panick bought mountains of toilet paper during COVID, maybe. Not very logical. It started when the earthquake warning came, but the warning is now lifted.

Why?
