Apparently they were designed to help stop the spread of disease between people too, Brian. Better than nothing, isn't it.

While the situation is terrible, these little cardboard rooms are intriguing. They look to be able to afford inhabitants at least a modicum of privacy and dignity in a terrible circumstance. It seems that emergency services are (unfortunately) quite prepared and practiced at deploying them.
I was in the army when we had a very rare circumstance up here in 1998 -an ice storm, to be specific- where people were evacuated from their homes and had to sleep on cots in an open hall. It was all very helter-skelter, and we were called out to do the best we could. This arrangement is leaps and bounds beyond what we could manage. Going to see if I can find out more about this as an emergency measure.
Edit: Well, now. Here we are. Positively brilliant bit of design!
