The intended function is that it's always recording front and rear as a dash cam but the screen is off when you're driving and it's just a normal mirror. The screen comes on when you put it into reverse to act as a back up camera. However the screen can be set to be on all the time (some cars are starting to come with these camera mirrors now), but being aftermarket and just using a standard RCA input, there's nothing stopping you from plugging a tuner or DVD player into it and using it as a TV.

From what I know about these, they only turn on when the reversing camera would be on, and it functions like a normal mirror while driving. Don't know how good they are because I haven't used one. Seems unnecessarily complicated.
