This is really good advice! I remember in Utsunomiya I was riding my motorbike and a farmer came out of nowhere. He was approaching on a road that was actually lower down and obscured by tall grass and reeds as was the junction. A little hill brought him up onto my road. So often, the approaching vehicles may not even be on the same level as you. I think for cyclists hiring bikes here on holiday it's a really good thing to keep in mind riding through rural areas because these farmers are busy and often drive like rally drivers.
