It has always intrigued me as to why Australia committed to having a dual gauge railway system between states stretching back to the colonial period in which the assumption was made at that time, that each state would self govern within in its own right. Then I visited Japan to discover they too have a dual gauge railway system, ie; subways and local railways (narrow gauge 1067 mm), shinkansen (standard gauge 1435 mm), even very narrow gauge of 762 mm can be found in parts of Japan based on geography and of course space. It's just an observation, but I do believe there are not too many countries that do have a functional dual gauge system as part of the norm.
