DRAMA! MICF! TRAVEL!

Hallo lovely Patreonites!

What a week of drama and Sisyphean admin. I’ll try to describe it in a way that is less boring and stressful than it was in real life, and get you up to date.

First! I’m still doing MICF! Apart from tonight’s show, the opening preview, where I will be in self isolation waiting for a third negative covid test to confirm that I definitely don’t have covid, which I definitely don’t.

My family holiday last week on Stradbroke island near Brisbane in Queensland was cut short by a lockdown in Brisbane, and then there was a whole day where all of the different states in Australia changed the rules on whether you:

a) had to come back immediately

b) weren’t allowed to leave

c) weren’t allowed to enter

And where you were allowed to have been in order to do any of the above.

So for a couple of days it looked like I wasn’t going to be able to get into Victoria to do MICF, and I cancelled all my flights and accommodation while also applying for special exemptions from having been in a ‘red zone’ (because I’m sooooo important) - note here, I didn’t expect to get an exemption, I just would have felt horrendous cancelling all my shows without putting in my best efforts.

It was quite frustrating, because I knew that we were wildly unlikely to have been exposed to this outbreak because we’d driven in and spent our time exclusively with family or at the beach outdoors. It was a very antisocial holiday just hanging out with my niece and new nephew and cooking for each other, but also, my frustration was tempered by the fact that this kind of paranoid early lockdown is exactly why Australia has done so well against the virus that a family holiday and a festival were possible.

Then they changed the forbidden zones to slightly regulated zones and all of my work trying to get an exemption was rendered redundant! (Hooray! Sigh!) I rebooked alll my flights and accommodation (more expensively, natch) and I’m on a plane on my way to Melbourne now. Only one show cancelled, and everything looking peachy for the run. A real weight off my mind.

I didn’t want to give an update until things were more certain, and now they seem pretty solid, so that’s a massive relief. Now I’ll go work on my show, because I blew out the last two days of stress with admin and binge watching Deadwood, which I’d never seen before. It didn’t feel worth working on a show that wasn’t going to happen, which is a sign of how sad and defeated I was about the whole thing, but now it’s back on, and I have my favourite thing; a terrifying deadline.
