Stormy times, light on the horizon, thoughts for next year.

Hallo!

I’m thinking about the future, assuming there is one - I’ve spent most of this year feeling like it’s impossible to plan more than three months ahead, but that now includes the beginning of next year.

If you’re a The Last Post listener, you’ll know that project is framed as “366 days of this year”, and that final show is now in sight. I couldn’t really imagine getting through a whole year of 7 days a week when I started this project, sick as a dog in December last year. (If you listen to the first few weeks of the show, you’ll hear me borderline delirious with the worst flu ever, trying to figure out what a daily news show from an alternate dimension would even sound like).

Now the end is well and truly in sight, and there’s still a lot of fun to be had - I want to wrap up some of the news arcs we’ve opened through the year, I want to do a livestreamed Xmas special. We’ll have Merch:

But also, I’m talking to Chris (good luck to him) about what next year looks like.

We’ll be doing another Bugle spin-off show, but whether it’ll be variation on The Last Post or a completely new project is still up in the air. The daily show (as you noticed when we went from 7 days a week to 6) isn’t entirely economically feasible, what with paying guests and Ped and so on, so in the absence of some sort of big sponsor we almost definitely won’t be carrying on with TLP as it is.

Things we’ve been tossing up include:

I’d love your thoughts on the matter. What would you like to see me do in The Bugle Extended Universe?

Also, generally, what would you like to see more of from me.

Xx

Whatever the next thing is, it should definitely be called Half a Glass of Water

I'd also be happy to pay for the whole year of TLP minus Acast ads. For what comes next, I'm sure whichever direction you go will be a delight though I"m partial to a Lady Bugle. To make the economics work, is it less or more work to have a subscription service like the Bugle or a one-off gofundme/indiegogo to fund the show? In either case, I'd rather ante in to artists than a giant corporation.

D’Ancey LaGuarde is fantastic! I would love even just a snippet of a podcast where you simply read out new blurbs for the latest in the avalanche of novels!

Yeah, I think they are hilarious like so well written that anyone could read them and they'd be funny, but you can tell by your voice that you are so amused/pleased to be sharing them with the world that it takes it to the next level. Like when you can't quite keep it straight as if you had never heard it before, the laughter is just contagious!

I feel D’Ancey will always have a place in my heart. The ads have tapped a barrel of something that was clearly brewing since I was twelve and my brother and I became hysterical reading mills and Boone blurbs out loud at a bnb on holiday.

I love TLP so much that I would probably vote for that weekly, but really, they all sound like fun ideas and I am sure I'll enjoy listening to whichever you choose. If you do go a different route, it would definitely be worth keeping up the D’Ancey LaGuarde ads no matter what the podcast is about :-D

I've only been able to handle taking in any news via the medium of satirical comedy this year, and I doubt next year will be any different. There's been so many wise and sharp insights from you and your guests on so many topics and issues, many I had no idea about, and this is really my favourite thing about TLP, so weekly TLP gets my vote. TLP has broadened my perspectives (and my twitter and podcast feeds) so much and I'm forever grateful you took on this monunental challenge, especially this year! Of the rest I'd go: Science, lady, history, D'Ancey (I love the silly but I'd miss everything I said above!). But that's just me :)

All the ideas sound great, but Robin Ince has already got science with humour well catered for and history would be more in line with the Bugle cannon.

In terms of ideas then Science and/or History bugle would be brilliant (alternate weeks?) . If "Lady Bugle" means you, Tiff and Alison talking nonsense then yes please. I love D'Ancey - maybe one day you'll write a whole novel (I mean, D'Ancey will give you a copy) but maybe time to retire it when it's still really funny? Correspondingly, a weekly LP may just remind us all of what it once was and hence a fresh start would be good....but that's my tuppence ha-penny...

Right so first things first. I am amazed that you, Chris, Ped etc. have stuck with the pace. I've felt a certain pang of guilt thinking about the amount of work you guys have been throwing at this for my minimal Patreon contribution. So - I'll be sorry to hear the end of TLP but slightly relieved for you all.

Some fantasy-satirical Young Adult fiction, I reckon

I think a history bugle sounds good, it's such a rich source of material. The other good thing about history is how positive it is that the world always learns from the past and never repeats any mistakes....;-)

Any of those suggestions would be great. My 2nd/3rd preferences are Lady and Science bugles, but my first preference is a weekly TLP, so long as D’Ancey LaGuarde is featured occasionally (unless you're going to end her with an accurately spilled half a glass of water, thus revealing she was a witch all along :) ) Her writings rival Cal Wilson's Adele.
