This was really a learning experience with Blender 2.8, and with its Eevee engine. I thought I would snobbily stick with Cycles but I'm liking eevee more than I expected. It's definitely "good enough".
This is all modelled from scratch, and the crowd is a particle system that emitted on only one frame. I slowly increased the turbulence of the particles to make them appear more excited as the music swelled. Even though they're like two shapes each, it really made things run slow when there were 25000 of them.
