Mad Men 7x02 Reaction

Mad Men 7x02 Reaction Mad Men 7x02 Reaction

Comments

The comments are right on target for Roger, Jim, and the office politics. Who keeps getting their way? Jim, whether it's an outcome we "like" or not. Don is gone. Bob is where Jim put him. Joan is where Jim put her. Dawn is where Jim put her (essentially, via Joan). Pete and Ted are in another world on the west coast. Bert is wandering around worrying about who is sitting at a desk and whining about a conference call. Roger tries, but he's being outmaneuvered, and his little pal/push is gone. Harry and Ken aren't partners. Lou is a sour vile man parked in an office. Peggy is playing with flowers. Who runs the company? If you had to pick one person you'd pick Jim now.

Love that shot of Don and Sally in the car, with the dirt on the window separating them. His lies! Beautiful.

lol cutler giving joan a promotion is about him courting allies. he doesn't care about joan. since last season we see him conspiring to slowly oust or minimize the scdp side of the agency. (the whole agency name change was strategically suggested to distract don and roger from this and keep them happy). joan thinks rogers reaction is about her (as do l&m) but its really about him realizing what culter is doing

Peggy's storyline feels like something out of a sitcom. I laughed out loud when she asked Shirley to throw the flowers away. I can imagine a Seinfeld exchange - "Well was there a card?" "There was no card Jerry, no card! They were on my desk and there was no card!" I find stuff like that very endearing.

"I'm so many people" is a sleeper pick for the best line of the series. Think of all of Don/Dicks identities throughout the show.

I can understand why Lola had such a big problem with Roger ever since the Joan and Jaguar situation. She makes it clear that she missed any reaction from him, whether supportive or not and I think that's valid given the type of relationship they had for years. Roger basically wasn't shown having any real opinion on the situation. I also would have liked to see something from him, we had a solid reaction from Don, but not from Roger. It makes sense in terms of character development if he had truly stopped caring about her and moved on, but he literally shows he still cares during season 6, so it's strange that he didn't care at all about her basically being put in a position to prostitute herself.

Roger is a person that doesn't know the names of the people who work on his company and who has no empathy or remorse about firing people. I'm not surprised he also acts a bit cold with the people who has close personal relationships with.

Roger: Spends the entirety of S5 trying to have an amicable relationship with Joan and offering her money but being constantly rejected and told by Joan that she does not want his help Roger: Hears at the end of S5 that Joan wants to go ahead with the Jaguar deal and does not try to stop her Lola: I WILL NEVER FORGIVE

- The absence of Betty this episode is itself an indirect sign of Sally's growth. Normally their episodes were tied together, but now as Sally has grown up and become her own person we can be dropped right into an episode with her and still perceive her as a person, without needing the home/family life angle as a crutch. - Peggy was embarrassing, and it's probably a low point for many people who find her annoying, but at least she has the conviction of not softening at all toward Ted when she thinks he's trying to win her back. What he did appears successful in getting her to lose all love for him, that's for sure. His confusion is great, "They never said which of Peggy's accounts we lost". I love the scene with Stan and Ginsberg in the elevator and how Peggy is oblivious that it's Valentine's Day. But of course, it's a double standard because no one cares that Ginsberg probably doesn't have a date. Nonetheless, Peggy continues to reinforce the unfavorable stereotype of the mean, cold ageing woman with how she treats Shirley. I find the whole thing hilarious. Since Peggy's loneliness was set up starkly in the premiere, it's allowed to take more of a comedic shape in this episode. - Joan gets a much-needed reprieve from the traffic (literally, the name on the door) of the office, and gets an office of her own. And we see Dawn slide into her position, a development from the S6 episode where it was hinted Dawn might succeed Joan one day. - Pete going real American Psycho with that "I don't seem to exist" monologue. - In the S6 finale we find out that Don is getting "fired" the same time that Don finds out. I'm not sure how there would be a scene of Roger defending him if that already happened? There is a whole moment that depicts Roger's stance pretty clearly. Don looks at Roger's face and asks if they all agree with this, and Roger says "Try and see it from our side" which says all that needs to be said: his hands are tied, what is he meant to do? Maybe Lola forgot because she said she felt betrayed by Roger in the moment? We also know from Roger's failed chat with Lou this episode that he misses Don... Idk, everything is there.

"Happy Valentine's Day. I love you" A moment that can melt the iciest of hearts. This might be my favorite needle drop in the show, I know for many it's Tomorrow Never Knows, or You Only Live Twice or Both Sides Now. For me it's this episode and the indescribable warmth I get when the music starts to play and we just watch Don's befuddled expression as he reels from hearing that his daughter loves him.

You could probably argue that Mad Men plays the "contemporary pop song into credits" card too often... but when it works, it works. One of my favourite moments in the entire series -- a perfect song for a perfect moment. I've said it before, but Kiernan Shipka turning into such a strong actress was a godsend for this series. You just don't see a parent/child relationship on television given this much time to ebb and flow and evolve. What a gift to watch it with Don & Sally. "Don't let got of my hand now the darkness has gone. This will be our year, took a look time to come." Oh and Joan sticking Meredith on Lou's desk is such a funny choice. I know she knifed Don on the way out, but she doesn't like his replacement very much either.
