Finally caught up on monster and now i'm sad because there is so little to go :(

I disagree, I will say that monster’s characters are written with more care in terms of their personalities and introspectively. I think it’s more mature and in terms of writing consistency I think monster is definitely better. But I dont like people undermining death note. The plot of death note is better in my opinion and more engaging. I think what death note misses is the introspective aspect of the characters which in contrary monster excels at. More than 99% of other mangas out there. But idk I dont like the comparison between characters and series only because they entertain you in different ways. I can make anyone watch death note and they’ll enjoy it. I cant say the same for Monster. But it doesn’t diminish it. Same goes for death note.

https://youtu.be/ylXpj8ha3s0?si=xEVfcLu6joW2oq6l a great video from friendly space ninja about johan. “The most terrifying character ever written”

The final and best arc of monster, Ruhenheim. Absolute cinema ✋😐🤚

Fun facts about Naoki Urasawa/Monster: 4. Johan Liebert was inspired by European fairy tales, not serial killers - Urasawa specifically cited Grimm-style fairy tales and “evil without reason” archetypes rather than real-life criminals.

Imagine what it must be like to be "Johan". Dressed up to look like your sister from birth, never having a name, and even the memories you think you hold are not your own. At that point you have to wonder if the person/figure we see and know as "Johan" even exists? EDIT: Speaking on Light Vs Johan/Death Note vs Monster. Yeah there's not even a comparison. People who think Light/Death Note are anywhere near as well written as Monster and Johan dont know what theyre talking about. Not even in the same league. Death Note is good for what it is, but as a story examining characters and motivations? Nah Also, please please please stop reading the titles. Please.

Honestly, Johan’s most wholesome attempt at gaslighting

To me read it as self preservation. Like how did they know he wasn't gonna snap on them at some point. His death scene is one of my favorite scenes in the series

Johan not being able to look Nina in the eyes kills me everytime. The child's pov, looking up at all the adults in the Red Rose Mansion is such a good choice. It made the scene more horrific imo.

I would say Light is a good villain, but wasted potential as a character. Death Note should've been an interesting examination of how directly holding the power of life & death in your hands will inevitably lead to a god complex & foster moral decay, but instead Light was portrayed as evil almost immediately, as if the death note merely revealed his true self that always existed underneath. That made Light more hateable, but it hurt the story.

Father of the Year

It's so funny to me that I only know the existence of the meme through the South Park episode. Never heard from it before :D

Ironically, Petr Čapek was not killed by the twins themselves, but by bodyguards seeking revenge after he murdered their friend, driven by his fear that the twins planned to kill him.

I'm going to bring this topic up because this debate recently resurfaced on TikTok and I need to take every opportunity I have to throw shit at Light. One of the discussions I see most often in the anime world is about who is a better villain in terms of character, Light or Johan, and this is one of the stupidest debates to me. Firstly, I don't consider Johan a villain, but rather a person who lacked a decent adult around him to support and love him. Light, on the other hand, is just a frustrated guy wanting to be God and committing genocide, all for extremely futile and empty beliefs. To make matters worse Death Note in general deals with the subject very poorly. Johan is a horrible human being with a great capacity for manipulation and destruction, but he carries a tragic and well-constructed backstory, a philosophy, and a nihilism imposed on his life even before he was born. I was able to love him and feel empathy despite all his actions, something I couldn't do with Light The way Urusawa wrote Johan as a character is fascinating. EDIT: Ok I just started watching the review and they talked about Light/Death Note, great timing to drop this comment 😅

Are you two going to be watching A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms? You’d love it!
