It looks like perhaps you missed the line in 1x08 ("Narkina 5") during the party at Mon Mothma's residence. When she joined her husband Perrin's small-talk conversation with a guest couple by one of their many gigantic windows, and it was revealed that she became a Senator at only 16 years of age. In that same conversation, they also said they had already been married for a year when she took office. Therefore she was only around 15 years old at their wedding, and were likely much younger when the engagement was actually even agreed upon.

Seeing a lot of comments [here on Patreon and on Youtube] that cite Tony Gilroy as the writer of Kino's and Luthen's monologues, but this is slightly inaccurate. Gilroy was the showrunner and "writer" of the series AS A WHOLE, and NOT necessarily the writer of the exact lines for EACH screenplay of EACH episode/story arc. The specific screenwriter credited to "One Way Out" [and the entire Narkina story arc] is Beau Willimon, who was previously most known for the 2013-2018 US adaptation of "House of Cards" [on Netflix], and prior to that had established a career as a playwright for theater production along with some writing credits for films such as 2011's "Ides of March" (itself an adaptation of his own play) and 2018's "Mary Queen of Scots". Willimon also happens to be an executive producer [but not writer] for "Severance" season 2 and onward.
Other comments are also attributing "Rogue One" entirely to Tony Gilroy, but this is also inaccurate. Gilroy was brought on late in the project, allegedly to "rescue" the film from storytelling incoherence and poor planning, arguably "saving" it from disaster, according to several sources.

I have deep admiration for the producer of this absolute masterpiece of a show, Tony Gilroy — not just for his effort, but also for his intellect. You can just feel the effort and emotion put into this, that’s why it’s so good. In an interview, he talked about how much he sacrificed while making these two seasons. He was working EVERY DAY for four years straight, constantly thinking about the story and the plot, and how to make everything perfect. I guess you can draw parallels from Luthen’s speech to his four whole years of making this show.

Fun fact: now that it's been revealed that Lonni is an undercover agent for the rebellion (or at least Luthen's network), there was a scene earlier where Partagaz scolds Lonni for why his detention numbers were below neighboring sectors and that's probably because Lonni was intentionally trying to reduce his numbers.
Another interesting undercover Lonni moment was when he gave suggestions on how to improve incarceration numbers, he gave fairly tame suggestions like increasing troop presence on beaches, which unfortunately and ironically was how Cassian got arrested.
One of the things I like about Andor is how they show you the decisions/discussions in that ISB supervisor room (even if it's just discussions in the background) then few episodes later (or maybe even same episode) they show you the direct impact of that at ground level (ie. Lonni suggest increasing troop presence on beaches, later you see shore troopers patrolling the beaches).

I slightly prefer Aldhani but this is a banger. Lonnie (ISB double agent) is a really interesting under-looked character I think. Luthen can talk a big game (and has the stones and clout to back it up) but ultimately he goes back to his little shop with Kleya, where he can be vulnerable and honest. Mon Mothma is in a wildly dangerous situation, but can still confide in Vel and lean on Tay Kolma. To our knowledge Lonnie is genuinely and completely alone. He has no-one. He's been working alone for 6 years (same as Cass's prison sentence btw) being friends with horrible ISB workers, directly causing the death/suffering of millions. When he wakes up in the night to feed his baby girl he does so knowing that any day, Dedra or whoever could walk into his office with security and it'd be over. He'd be tortured and his family too probably 🤷
It's easy to write off because Lonnie is just 'an office worker' ("your career has benefited greatly", as if he gives a shit) and not getting shot at in a heist etc but Luthen is right: Lonnie is "a hero". No wonder he feels his sacrifice is unnoticed, the only person he has to talk to is habitual liar, "whatever it takes" Luthen...
Lonnie: "I risk my life every day and you never say thank you"
Luthen: "THAT'S WHAT THE REBELLION IS FOR!"

You will never catch me hating Kathleen Kennedy because she pushed for a "cassian andor prequel show" (what a wild idea lmao) and when it wasn't working out asked her mate Tony to come help fix it like Rogue One, then championed his pitch and commissioned 2 seasons off the jump. What a decision.

Edit: y’all I was wrong thank you to the people commenting below 😂
52:00 the show was originally supposed to be five seasons, but there’s a lot of reasons it got turned into two. Biggest amongst them was it’s the most expensive tv show Disney ever made and their streaming service has lost them so much money that there was never a chance Disney would greenlight more seasons. There are other reasons too but this was the biggest one.
To be clear going in the writers knew season 2 was the last one so it’s not as if the story finished inconclusively

I don't know what's the best episode of Andor, but I do think One Way Out is my favorite. It's such a great build up of energy and momentum and huge emotional payoffs. There are the obvious standouts of the prison break and Luthen and Lonni's conversation, but also Davo Sculden and Mon's conversation is great. Sculden's rebuttals for everything Mon says is so engaging and shows he's more than just some thug. And throughout the episode the score is buzzing along elevating everything.
And finally, Luthen earnestly says to Lonni "I need all the heroes I can get" and then we cut to Cassian and Melshi running to freedom against the triple-moon lit night as the track "Heroes" plays. For me its the most euphoric, jubilant, triumphant ending. Perfect end to a perfect episode.

It feels criminal to pick a favourite moment in this incredible episode, but Luthen's speech is a HOF television moment for me. We seen him make hard choices in previous episodes -- including condemning 50 men to death here -- and this is a look at how much he resents being forced to make those choices and how well he understands that they are necessary. Condemned to use the tools of his enemy to defeat them.
"I've made my mind a sunless space." Wow. That's why you put Stellan Skarsgård in your show.

Edit: I said it in a previous episode, but it is a bit funny to think about the larger ramifications of the prison break. Obviously we know that Cassian was wrongly imprisoned, and that the Empire is a totalitarian regime, but there were probably some hardcore murderers and villains imprisoned there before it became a forced labour camp, right?

Kino knew that they were surrounded by water but i dont think he knew that swimming was the only option. There could have been ships docked at the prison. But i also think it wouldn’t have made a difference. I suspect he took his own life once everybody left and found some solace in knowing that some prisoners would make it ashore and would tell the world what happened in that prison.

Tony Gilroy has spent decades studying resistance fighters. It’s a passion of his. And that lifetime of preparation is apparent in every episode of Andor. He knows an inordinate amount about this topic and has thought deeply about what successful resistance efforts have in common. It’s really quite remarkable.

This is my favourite episode (with a close second on season 2) litterally cannot think of a better one of all the series I've seen (maybe some counted on one hand are on the same level). Can't swim always devastates me but also envigorates me even more. Kino chose to rebel even if there wasn't any benefit for him. His win was an existential one against a system that exploited him for nothing.
And absoloutely agree with Lola this speech perfectly distills the character of Luthen to the point where you understand each choice he is going to make in the coming episodes. I would say though that he also has the romantic idealist in him, otherwise he wouldn't make that speech, a very Byronic one. Mothma having to sucrifice her only child shows how she has to become more ruthless, a quality associated with Luthen for her to be a leading figure in the Rebellion.

Luthen’s monologue here is honestly one of the best speeches in the entire Star Wars franchise. It captures his whole character in a few minutes — a man who has no illusions about what he’s doing or what he’s become. Whether people think he goes ‘too far’ or not, he’s one of the most morally consistent and self-aware characters in the show.
I can totally respect and admire morally questionable characters if theyre atleast not selfdeluded. Luthen is basically the anti-Walter White.

The weekly episodes of the first season of Andor were released right around the same time as the presidential election period in my country in 2022, and we were living through absolute chaos at that time.
