I think the biggest danger of meeting violence with violence is provocation. What I mean is in the earliest days of a fascist takeover & authoritarian rise those trying to make a police state look for any reason to justify their brutal takeover. When violence is used as answer it gives the oppressors the ability to use propaganda & moves the needle in the citizens enough that small steps toward Totalitarian, Facist & Authoritarian become giant leaps.
I know presently in the US we are seeing an administration that is salivating over their planned attack on those that don't share the ideological beliefs they have. The 7 million people who protested across the US in the No Kings rallies really pissed the administration off because no violence was used. Every day that violence doesn't come damages their plans because if the Needle has moved any amount for the public it has been against their narrative.
Thus far those who oppose the administration have found some extremely creative ways to disrupt their propaganda & grow support. People have dressed up in blow up costumes, had lawyers with megaphones challenge & explain police action, held naked bike rides & continously record policing actions and thus far it hurt the authoritarian narrative about the enemy & nature of the how to fight the power.

This is correct. In Belfast, Derry and other places, residents would bang metal bin lids (trash can lids) on the pavement to alert the community when soldiers were raiding: https://www.reportdigital.co.uk/cache/pcache/00129924.jpg
It was also something women (often older women who couldn't fight) could do to help: https://extramuralactivity.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/binlids-derry-1970s.jpg

Someone on youtube said that the banging of metal to warn the community was inspired by people in Northern Ireland who did the same during the Troubles

Its not particularly relevant for LM but the ship is even more interestingly a proto-CIS (Separatist) ship. We see an early version of the CIS logo and you can draw an aesthetic line from this crashed ship, to the separatist forces, to the Imperial tech of Andors era. This somehow makes it even more clever becahse it reinforces that "modern" Imperial tech is built on CIS tech which didn't come out of nowhere, it was one type of tech being built in the Republic by factions which would later break off and form the hardware basis for the separatists in the Clone Wars, and later is fully embraced as the Empire's entire aesthetic of ship and weapon design.

A big theme of this season I think is Cassian running away. In his first scene he kills two cops and runs away. He gets back to Ferrix and we find out he's been running away from his debts, we learn in childhood he had to run away from his home being destroyed and now in adulthood he has to run away from his new home. Something to think about as the season continues

I think it's a cool detail that the ship that crashed on Kenari wasn't the Empire because the Empire didn't exist yet, it was still the Republic. It's rare in Star Wars that the Republic is ever portrayed in anything other than a positive light, it usually represents the idyllic 'before time' before the Empire came to power. But here the Republic is basically a stand in for the same entity as the Empire. The Republic shot that girl, they presumably built that strip mine, they may have had something to do with the fact that Cassian's tribe seemed to lack any adults, and the interior of that crashed ship was clearly designed by set designers to look Imperial with the red stripes on the walls.
It makes me feel like the show's saying the Empire didn't originate out of a vaccuum. The Empire may be young but the injustices that need fighting aren't. In the same way these pre-mor cops aren't technically stromtroopers but they'll still put their boots on your neck if you lay down and let them.

RIP Timm. You sucked a lot.
Obviously not an original thought -- or the last time we'll talk about how prescient / timely / of-the-moment this show has turned out -- but those corpo shitheads stomping around Ferrix and shouting about having a warrant for Kassian... well, it's timely!
I figured "Don't you want to fight these bastards for real?" would be the 100% buy-in moment for you two and wasn't disappointed. That did it for me, too. Shout out Stellan Skarsgard. (Not the last time we'll say that either.)

As horrible as it sounds, I don’t think there has been any significant social/political/economic change that has happened without violence.
History has been whitewashed to make it seem like peaceful protest is the only right way to right wrongs. And while I would love to live in a world where that is the ideal, it’s not the truth of the world we live in.

Was about to make the same comparison with Ireland. This show's writer room has a knack for weaving in historical acts of resistance, both big and small. It tends to resonate with people even if they aren't aware of the particular reference. What a brilliant show.

Rewatching the episode with y'all reminds me how fucking good the rest of show gonna be. Luthen seemingly had a "bad guy" introduction in episode 2, but through his conversation with Cassian you can really feel there's so much background (like he knows so much info about Andor) and unexplored history behind his drive of rebelling against the Empire. Really excited for y'all to watch the rest of the show. Like others said, it only gets better from here 😮💨

I used to be one of those people and over the last ~5 years i've fully come around to thinking that real change seems impossible without the use of violent resistance. Listening to Revolutions podcast by Mike Duncan genuinely helped (also a source of inspiration for Tony Gilroy on Andor). I struggle to see how we affect meaningful change without some level of violence.
To build on what you're saying: Martin Luther King was memorialized as THE hero of the civil rights movement purely because [edit: he was reframed to stand for] 'peaceful protest' which is convenient for a state that wants that to be the only method of resistance. There is no federal Malcolm X day, there is no Roger F. Williams Day. The suffragettes smashed in shop windows and firebombed politician's houses (when they were away). There has been a concerted effort to sanitize these movements. Stonewall was a capital-R Riot, not a fun march or party.
Kara

I think this is one of the reasons I get so frustrated with people who say that all resistance and demonstrations have to be peaceful.
No. No large social change in history ever happened solely through peaceful resistance and protests. The women's suffragette movement, civil rights, gay rights in the US were all fought for and all those fights involved violence. Revolution isn't bloodless and the ones that have their boots on our neck will never give us an inch unless we make it too costly to ignore.
Violence is necessary, sadly.

More than ever I think this is the perfect show for the perfect channel at the perfect time. It heals but it stings, like antiseptic sprayed on a wound. It really is a perfect thing, even this early on. I cried at the ending, again! And we have ~7 more arcs to go 😭
A lot of Andor is inspired by real history and revolution. The Ferrix community banging metal to alert the town is drawn from Ireland, where locals would bang pots / pans and trashcan lids to alert when the police or paramilitaries were coming. Also drawn from real life, removing street signs so it's harder for outsiders to navigate.
I was mostly sold by this episode but there's even more greatness to come. Andor does what many great shows do which is present people and concepts as complex, multifaceted things. Timm is an awful snitch, but doesn't deserve to die. Syril Karn is a wielder of oppressive force, but also a sniveling boy who immediately gives up his team when in danger. Maarva saves Cassian's life, but also colonially kidnaps a kid from his home + tribe. A lot of Star Wars is about Good and Evil as ontological binary concepts and Andor feels "real" despite having laser guns and planet-hopping spaceships because it builds a world that is shades of grey all the way down. It being grounded with amazing performances, writing, production quality + historical precedent only helps this. It's just a really, really good show and I'm glad you loved this ep!
Bonus thoughts: The gun Cassian uses in the present day is the same gun we see his (presumed) adopted father Clem use in the flashback. B2 being a 'salvage droid' makes his shape + functions make a lot of sense, he's like sentient luggage 💀. I love that Brasso (cassian's friend) sabotages the ship not with high-tech skills or explosives, but by tethering it to a big piece of metal, it reminds us that 99% of resistance is normal working people using whatever they have to do whatever they can (simple is often better).

They chose to not translate the language they spoke on kenari and I really like that choice. We know what happens to the planet and it feels like we don’t get to be part of that culture because they erased it. To me it adds to the tragedy of it. Also it’s cool to try and figure out what the characters are saying from context clues rather than language
