Lethal force is permitted only as a last resort, for example, to prevent an immediate and serious threat to life. If the suspect had actually pointed a loaded pistol at Detective Braun, the shooting would almost certainly have been judged lawful self-defense, regardless of the fact that the suspect was under 18. That said, officers who kill someone, even in clear-cut cases of self-defense, often struggle with PTSD, guilt, and recurring flashbacks, and many require counseling. It’s not uncommon for them to leave the force voluntarily or to retire early on medical grounds. Alcohol abuse would also have been taken seriously. If an officer was known to have a drinking problem, suspension or mandatory therapy could follow, especially if their behavior had negatively affected an operation, even if their actions were ultimately deemed justified.
