We will all have our own definition of what success looks like with money, career, health life and relationships.
But generally speaking, success can be defined as:
Success = Achieving significantly MORE than what you’ve done until this point today.
Success = You significantly outperforming your current self.
1. The Unknown
As humans, It's in our nature to want to understand what's happening around us. Uncertainty can be unsettling.
We're fine with almost any situation, as long as we know what to expect.
Unexpected situations that don't match our expectations can leave us feeling disappointed.
People often prefer sticking to familiar scenarios, where outcomes are known, over pursuing success that leads into the unknown.
This is why some people say:
“The devil you know is better than the unknown angel”
This mentality keeps many people in unfortunate situations. Like remaining in a toxic relationship.
Success brings its own set of unique challenges and situations that you couldn't possibly prepare for because everyone's path to success is different.
The unknown is what bothers us. In combat sports, for example, let's take boxing. The punch that your opponent does not see coming is the one that knocks them out.
If you know someone is about to punch you, you can brace for it. You might stumble, block it, or take a hit, but being prepared means it won't hurt as much as a punch you never saw coming.
It's the unexpected punch that can knock you down, the one that really hits hard because you weren't ready for it.
This is how we are as people, too.
We're okay as long as we can see what's coming. It's the unknown, the surprises we can't prepare for, that really throw us off and perplex us.
Some people prefer to stay away from anything that might lead to uncertain results, including the path to success.
2. Stress
There are different kinds of stress in life, and the one most people talk about is distress. This is the bad kind of stress.
When people say they're stressed out, feeling tired, overwhelmed, or like life is against them, they're talking about distress.
It's the type of stress that wears you down, ages you, turns your hair grey, and makes you want to shut down from whatever's causing it.
It's definitely the kind of stress you'd want to avoid. Then there's another kind called ‘EUSTRESS’
Eustress is the positive kind of stress that you intentionally seek out because you believe it will make you better.
It's the kind of stress that comes from taking on challenges that push your boundaries in a good way.
Situations themselves don't force feelings upon us - we choose how we feel about them. It's a personal choice.
Just because something is challenging doesn't mean it has to lead to negative stress.
The challenges and expectations that come with creating more success in your life can be seen as eustress (positive stress) instead of distress (negative stress).
It all depends on how you choose to view these challenges and expectations. They can work for you, helping you grow and improve, or work against you, causing stress and discomfort.
The choice is yours.
3. More Misery Than Pleasure
This is another one of those thinking your way out of something before you even do it.
If you think success will bring more trouble than benefits, you will unconsciously hold yourself back from achieving it.
You will think that this success won't improve your life but will worsen it.
This fear comes from the belief that with success comes a heavier burden, one that outweighs any positive outcome(s).
You need to decide:
A) if you truly believe it brings more misery than pleasure and you are willing to give up on success and potentially happiness
B) Change your perspective to see how success could bring both improvement and pleasure
It's a choice you have to make.
