The Gut's Influence on Your Skin: Understanding the Connection for Better Gut & Skin Health

A healthy gut is essential for overall health, including skin health.

The gut and skin are connected through something called the gut-skin axis, which means that the health of one can greatly impact the other.

Everyone wants a young, vibrant, glowing and healthy skin.

However, many people fail to recognise that skin health starts in the gut.

Many people who have skin issues are desperately looking for the next best skin care products to clear away their skin issues, however they waste a lot of time and money trying to fix skin issues from the outside-IN, instead of inside-OUT.

Imbalances in the gut can lead to a variety of skin problems, such as acne, eczema, and rosacea.

Bad gut health is the result of:

Understanding the gut-skin connection is important to improve skin health and prevent skin problems.

By taking care of your gut health through diet, lifestyle changes, and possibly probiotics, you can improve your skin health and reduce the likelihood of developing skin problems.

The cause

A diet high in processed foods, sugar, and unhealthy fats can have a negative impact on the gut leading to an overgrowth of bad bacteria.

Processed foods usually contain artificial ingredients and added sugars that can feed harmful bacteria and disrupt the balance of the gut health.

High sugar consumption can lead to an overgrowth of yeast, which can further mess up the balance of the gut.

Unhealthy fats can also contribute to inflammation in the gut and lead to imbalances in the gut.

This can have a negative impact on gut health and increase the risk of skin problems.

Better diet and habits for a healthy gut

To have a healthy gut, it's important to eat a balanced diet with lots of fibre, fruits, and vegetables.

If you are eating vegetables, make sure to cook them first, don't eat them raw.

Reducing sugar and processed foods can help keep your gut in balance.

Adding fermented foods like low fat yogurt can provide the good bacteria for your gut.

Exercise and stress management can also improve gut health.

Probiotics and prebiotics for gut health

Pre & probiotics will be your best friend.

Rich sources of prebiotics are found in a variety of plant-based foods including leafy greens, oranges, kiwi fruit

Probiotics and prebiotics can help keep your gut healthy.

Probiotics are live bacteria that help maintain the balance in your gut.

This allows your gut bacteria to produce nutrients for your colon cells, which leads to a healthier digestive system

Prebiotics are food for these good bacteria.

Don't confuse probiotics with prebiotics.

Taking probiotics and eating prebiotic-rich foods can improve gut health.

Drink 2 litres of filtered water and fluids daily.

Water is important in the elimination of toxins and waste.

Remove unhealthy foods to reduce inflammation

Cutting out gluten, alcohol, processed foods, and refined sugar can help reduce stress on the body and lower inflammation.

Processed foods can cause digestive problems and make inflammation worse.

Fatty fish rich in OMEGA 3 can also be good for gut health support the production of the compounds your body needs to fight inflammation.

They can also boost the immune system and repair damage to the intestinal wall which could trigger leaky gut syndrome.

Examples of fatty fish high in omega 3s include salmon, sardines, Atlantic mackerel, herrings, and albacore tuna.

If you don’t like eating fish, then you can enjoy similar benefits from taking omega-3 supplements.

This is not a promotion and I do not make any money from recommending this product.

I have been using a supplement for the past 30 days called 'Athletic Greens'

The Athletic Greens powder combines vitamins, minerals, and nutrients designed to promote gut health, support immunity, boost energy, and help you recover faster from workouts.

Do not rush to buy this just because I recommended it, this supplement is more on the pricey side (£97) so please take the time to research about it and see if it's for you FIRST.

This product will not give you any superhuman outcomes.

I have been using for just under 30 days and I have noticed a slight boost in energy so far, however I want to make it very clear...

Fixing gut health issues won't be solved with 2 green shakes, I'll be real, when it comes to gut issues, it can take a few months for it to be solved.

Using these types of products just helps a great deal.

The recommended daily serving (1 scoop) supplies:

This is a low-calorie drink at around 50 calories per serving. So, safe to say it probably won’t make you gain weight or prevent you from losing weight.

It is also vegan friendly.

Drink it every morning on an empty stomach for best results.

Ultimately theres no supplement which can replace a good diet.

The bulk of your vitamin and mineral intake should come from the foods that you eat.

However, it can be difficult to eat adequate amounts of greens in a day.

Convenience, cost, and personal preferences all factor into how easy it is for you to get enough veg and leafy greens in your diet.

Greens supplements, like Athletic Greens, are one way to counteract this.

These supplements seek to fill the gaps in your diet caused by not eating enough vegetables and greens. They aren’t a replacement but can be a nutritional defence for shortcomings.

Gut-healing foods for skin health:

Ginger, garlic, low fat yoghurts and turmeric are my personal favourites

Ginger, garlic, and turmeric all have anti-inflammatory effects and can help reduce inflammation in the gut, which is important for skin health.

Low-fat yogurt is good for gut health because it contains probiotics, which are good bacteria for your gut.

These good bacteria help keep your gut healthy by balancing out the mix of bacteria that live there.

Eating low-fat yogurt can give your gut more of these good bacteria, making your gut work better.

This can help improve digestion, boost your immunity, and even make you feel better.

Low-fat yogurt is also a good source of calcium and protein, which are important for overall health.

In addition, incorporating healthy fats, such as olive oil and avocado, into the diet can support the skin's natural barrier function and reduce inflammation, leading to healthier skin.

By including these gut-healing foods in the diet, individuals can support gut health and improve skin health.

How to fix acne

1. Eating a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables (cooked), and whole grains can help support skin health and reduce inflammation.

2. Certain foods, such as dairy products and processed foods, can trigger acne in some people. Avoiding these triggers can help improve acne.

3. Drinking plenty of water can help flush toxins from the body and hydrate the skin, which can be beneficial for acne-prone skin. Aim for 2 litres a day

4. Using gentle skin care products: Using non-comedogenic, oil-free skin care products can help prevent clogged pores and breakouts.

Good skincare products (pick whichever you want):

If you are prone to redness and irritation, you will probably prefer La Roche Posay, whereas if you are mainly struggling with congested skin, you will most likely see better results with CeraVe

If you have very sensitive, or allergic dry skin its best to just stick with a soothing cleanser-  until your skin barrier is repaired and you are actually ready to use the active ingredients that might flair up your specific skin sensitivity

Soothing cleansers are non-foaming cleansers with a lot of antioxidants so it reduces inflammation, soothes and calms the skin, reduces redness, non-irritating which is Ideal for someone with rosacea or stinging and burning on the skin

If you're a woman reading, when you have acne prone skin, you want to avoid layering your face with makeup because it will clog up your pores making the acne worse.

Only apply a light layer of makeup.

5. Practicing good hygiene: Keeping your skin clean by washing your face twice a day with a gentle cleanser can help prevent breakouts.

With all that being said...

If you have skin issues, I would always recommend seeing a dermatologist as they will be the best ones to be able to carry out certain tests to see what's causing these skin issues, more times than not it's either allergic reactions or gut issues.

Gut health is a crucial aspect of overall health and well-being.

A balanced diet filled with fibre, fruits, vegetables (cooked), and fermented foods can help maintain the balance of the gut microbiome.

Probiotics and prebiotics, as well as supplements, can support gut health. (Check out athletic greens, but please do your research first)

Avoiding processed foods, refined sugar, gluten, and alcohol can reduce overall inflammation and stress on the body.

By incorporating gut-healing foods like bone broth, ginger, garlic, and turmeric, and incorporating healthy fats into the diet, individuals can support gut health and improve overall health.

Taking steps to maintain a healthy gut can lead to better skin health, improved digestion, and a stronger immune system.

Till next time.
