“You really do eat a lot.” Momo jabbed at me. Not that I care. Since I would work it all off soon, I still had to do my thousand nightly sword swings before I started working on the solar system.
“It’s energy that is needed to keep me moving forward!” I stood up and stretched before grabbing my plate. “Are you done?”
“Mmm… Unlike you I do not work out as much so I need to be careful with how much I eat.” Momo was always concerned about her weight. But I think at times like this, it was not much of a problem.
“I think you should eat more, to be honest. What if the heat wave doesn’t break? If food sources get low, that extra fat can be used to keep you from starving to death.” I know I might be overreacting, but I did not wish to see my best friend and sister starve.
“Then I will eat a bit more.” Momo pursed her lips and dug back in. I smiled and headed to the kitchen to rinse the dishes off before sticking them in the dishwasher. This was something I still did not understand even today. What was the point of a dishwasher if you had to wash the dishes before washing the dishes? But here I am, still doing it when I do not see the point in it. Human laziness at its best!
“Hey Jade, if the world was really coming to an end what would you do?” Momo asked suddenly. She was currently leaning on the back of the couch with her head resting on her arms.
Momo had never come across as a paranoid type of person. Unlike me, who always thinks about the what-ifs. But I think the fact that things were not looking good with the strange weather that she might be feeling anxious.
And as for her question, that was a simple one. “Learn to adapt. I would need to learn to adapt to the situation. I have enough food for four people to last two years if we skimp. But that does not mean things will change with in a two year time frame. Foraging for goods would also need to be done. But this can also bring up conflict.”
I sighed, just thinking about it. “As humans we all need food to survive. To do so you may need to take from others. I hate to say it but I think my sword might really end up coming in handy if that were the case.”
“So basically like how it is in the movies then? Killing people to gain resources?” I noticed Momo shivered slightly thinking about it. I, myself, am not sure how I would handle it. I don’t want to harm anyone. Yes, I would love to fight someone with my sword. I can not deny that fact, but that does not mean I wish to kill anyone. In fact, I think I would probably puke if I did.
Now, let’s say my life was on the line. If someone was trying to kill me and it was a do-or-die situation, then yeah, I would do what I needed to do. The same would go for if I had not eaten for days or did not know when my next chance of finding food would come, I might kill to gain the resources to sustain myself.
I might sound like a lunatic, but I am thinking realistically. I would rather live than die. And I am sure even those who would call me a loony at a time like this would do the same in the end. Only I would be laughing then.
Survival of the fittest. It was a natural thing in the world. Humans have done it since the dawn of time. Only laws now restrict such things as killing. But it still happens in third-world countries. Animals do it. Insects. Every living organism, down to the very cells in our bodies, is killing to survive. It’s a fact of life.
Once one is hungry enough, they could kill an entire family if it meant surviving. Only those who have heroic hearts would die for others. As for me, I could put my life on the line if I know I could win. But if I can’t, I would turn tail and run, pulling those I care about with me. If I am backed into a corner, I would fight to the death. That is also part of survival.
“Yes. Among other things. I would do it if I had no choice. But would rather not. If I have the ability I will help others with out issue. I would even start a community and try to rebuild once lost lives as long as there was a means to do so.” I explained as I stuffed the dishes into the dishwasher.
“Maybe I should learn how to fight…” Momo pursed her lips. “The thought of being protected all the time doesn’t sit well with me. Haha! Listen to me I sound like you now.”
“Momo, you do know I can put you over my knee and spank you until your can’t sit any more right?” I gave her a fair warning. How dare she pick on me!
“Hehe, don’t threaten me with a good time!”
“Pervert.”
“Hahaha!” Momo let out a laugh as she turned back around and began eating again. We were truly like sisters. We knew each other so well that we knew when to draw the line. When we were younger, Momo and I had our fair share of fights. Momo was always the sharp tongue one, and I would always threaten her with strength. But even with all the times we fought, we still made up and stayed friends. Momo was still an old pervert, while I was still a paranoid freak with a sword. A good combo if you ask me. At least our days were entertaining.
“At any rate. Momo. Make sure you tell your parents tomorrow that if they lose power then can come over as soon as they are ready. My home is always open to you and your family.” After all, I planned for four, not just one.
“I know. Thanks, Jade. You are always the bestest.” Momo did not even turn to look at me. She was still stuffing her face. I could only smile as I finished cleaning up.
Once I was done, I went upstairs to get changed into training clothes before heading to the back door with a towel and a drink in hand. “Momo, I am going to go train. Wash your dish when you are done.”
“Kay!”
