LYWTTA) Quite Simple

“This will be your room. Are you sure you only need a single room?” Lilly was very confused when Yuki told her they only needed one room, especially since Yuki did not explain why.

“Yes, this is good,” Yuki replied with a smile. The room was like a large apartment. It came with everything including a kitchen, bath, and living room. There was even an enclosed deck that they could walk out onto.

“Then do you wish to start learning about how our magic works?” Lilly asked as she led the two to the living area to sit down.

“That would be great,” Yuki was actually quite excited to begin learning this math-based runic magic.

“Then let’s start with the basics.” Lilly began to explain the ins and outs of the Runic circles, but it was all just a repeat of what she had said before. Only when she finished her recap did she begin explaining how to form a runic circle. She snapped her fingers and two maids walked over, handing both Yuki and Delia a book. “This here is the book all magis use to learn how to form their first circle.”

Yuki took the book and opened it up. She read through a bit of it and seemed to come to an understanding. The first book only used basic math. Addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication to create the first runic circle. But what she found was that the equation only helped one figure out the runes needed to create a runic circle. This was something she did not understand. Why go through all the trouble? Was it only to make sure people knew how to do math?

When she thought about the technology that the people of this world had and then how kids learned this stuff from a young age she realized this might just be the case. She leaned over and whispered into Delia’s ear. “Delia, ignore the equation and just understand the runes.”

“Okay.” Delia nodded and began studying the part that explained what each rune did.

“Is it hard?” Lilly thought that Yuki and Delia were having issues with the complexity of the equation.

“No, in fact, the entire system is half redundant,” Yuki replied without raising her eyes. She was busy trying to memorize all the runes. There were a lot of them.

“Redundant? What do you mean?” Lilly was very confused. She had never thought any part of the runic creation was redundant.

“Think about it. If the runes themselves are decided by the equation? How is it not redundant? The equation itself has no meaning. Even the answer is wrong. Like how does the answer of five create a fire symbol? It makes no sense. They just made a creative way for people to learn math and keep them wanting to learn more by adding it into a power system that is needed within the world. Like, watch.” Yuki raised her hand and tapped the air. She had already grasped the concept of mana since she could feel it in the air.

As long as you knew mana existed, if you used your willpower to control it, it would do as you wanted. Yuki’s comprehension had been honed over the years, so she already comprehended how to use this world’s power. Golden runes began to form in the air, creating a magic circle using the runes of this world. This spell was just a simple flame spell from the book she had just read under the fire element category.

“This is…” Lilly sat there in a daze. “Outward runic circle creation.”

“What’s so strange about creating a runic circle in the air? The runic circle is composed of mana. The mana of the world can be used to create the circle as your own spirit and willpower are strong enough to project your image outside your body. I only tapped the air as a means of visualization.” Yuki explained lightly. She then poked the runic circle, and it seemed to suck into her body with ease. She had found another curious aspect of these runic circles after seeing it in real life. “A runic circle can actually be changed once created. This is quite interesting.”

“What!?” Lilly almost collapsed. What did she mean it could be changed.

“Take a look.” Yuki motioned to Lilly to look at her. Lilly looked at Yuki and realized she was already a first circle magi. This was crazy!

Yuki smiled and flicked her fingers, causing a large runic circle to appear behind her head. “This circle has all the runes of a first circle embedded into it. What you guys use as calculations are more for the visual aspect if nothing else. Now, but now, if I were to will these runes to change.” Yuki did just as she said and the runes on the circle behind her instantly changed. She held out her hand, and a small fireball appeared. “As you can see, the simple flame is now a fireball without the force to make it fly towards a target. In fact, this entire process is very simple once you get the hang of it.”
