TROA) The Need To Level Up

We watched around the clock as the city not far away fell into chaos. The news reporters who tried to brave it all were sliced in half or impaled while trying to make reports. The people on the street were killed or run over by the crowds trying to escape. The chaos showed just how much humans turned selfish when their own survival was at stake. To be honest, I can not criticize them at all. After all, I, too, have done the same thing. I have killed to survive. It was the only path. When your life is in danger, your brain only thinks of how to survive. It is a natural instinct. Very few can stand up to fight.

Even for me, it took a long time before I could finally stand up to fight. Survival was key, but even in the middle of a battlefield, I have used comrades as shields to protect myself. It was how I survived many times. When I returned from the battlefield with new scars on my body, even those who knew what I did did not blame me. We were all the same. If you were unlucky, you became a shield. If you were lucky, you survived to be able to live another day.

“Mom, you can stop watching….” I looked over at my mother, who was crying away. Her eyes seemed to be glued to the screens, but she could not stop crying.

“No, I must watch!” My mother was very stubborn. I looked over at my father, who only shook his head. I guess there was not much else I could do.

“I will go make some food.” Even though we were watching a mass murder, I was still able to eat. This kind of thing was nothing. Even when you were on a battlefield surrounded by dead bodies, if you did not eat, you would not last.

“I will help!” Jen followed behind me.

“How do you feel now that you have seen everything?” I asked as I took out a pan.

“It’s surreal, that is for sure, but….” Jen let out a sigh. “You readied me for this day. So even though it’s saddening to know we will be fighting for survival now, I feel thankful that you helped me understand what to expect and readied me for all of this.”

“When the first wave ends, the two of us will take a quick trip to the city. Ever since I got my system, I have yet to level up. So…. I want to take out a few spiders and see if they will finally allow me to gain some experience points.” It was true. I have had my system this entire time but have been unable to level up. I even tried killing a human, but it still did nothing. Animals, even large bears, gave me no indication of leveling up.

The only thing I can think of now is that I must kill replicators. Why else would I have been given a system and sent back in time like this? If I could not level up, what would be the point of the system? It really brings a lot of questions to mind. Especially since when I died, I died to those replicators. It makes me wonder if I am some kind of experiment to this advanced civilization. Was I chosen to be some kind of higher being?

I know it is all speculation on my part, but there are so many unanswered questions when it comes to my rebirth. Not that I can complain. I mean, it has given me a lot to work with. However, I have a few skill points that I have yet to use since I am unsure of what I should be taking yet or if I can even gain more. So until I know for sure that I am able to do such a thing, then I will only use my skill points when I need to.

I have to admit, though my current setup is not bad. Earth Manipulation was a good buy since it has allowed me to create our current living space. I do hope in the future, though, that I will be able to level up some of these skills as well.

“I hope my training will come in handy then….” I could tell Jen was nervous. I mean, these things were like large dogs that kill in a single strike. But I also knew one thing for certain. I was faster than them in my current state. So I knew I could keep Jen alive. I just hope my assumption is correct and that when I kill one of these bastards, I will actually gain something from it. Otherwise, I will be back at square one. And that is the last thing I want at this time.

I let out a sigh as I began frying up an egg. In the future, eggs could be considered a luxury food. But I had enough of them to last for twenty years, even if all of us ate a single egg a day. I did rob a few chicken farms, after all.
