THE GOBLIN NEWSLETTER 126 - LEGACY

We watched the Mike Tyson against Jake Paul spectacle the other night. Hopefully most of you have seen the growth journey that Tyson has been on since he reemerged a decade ago or so. It’s amazing to watch someone that was so ego & base animalism driven & rewarded turn into such a gentle, real, self-owned person. I can definitely relate. One of the things that this fight was about was people’s expectation around Tyson’s legacy. Tyson has let go so fully that his legacy, especially from that time is more of an albatross. So many people view his legacy as their legacy, a thing that they partake in, because of the way that people glom onto the victories & losses of their favorite sports players, teams, what have you. People have surrendered the idea of legacy over to ego. It being “my legacy”. The thing is, legacy can be about the other, giving people something to cling to, to define themselves from. I’m not suggesting that Tyson should do this, I understand that part of his “letting go” is a total “letting go”. I understand that strategy. I have not totally let go, I don’t think I want to. I have let go more, sure. Earthly existence is not something we can not do. This is why everyone isn’t a monk & monks have to be supported by society. Monks aren’t out there asking for donations from other Monks. They get their money from people who are operating in the real world. I feel like my work is within the not-real worlds of fantasy & potential where I can meet people & give them real life lessons of various kinds. But, people definitely craved some kind of legacy from Tyson, I did too. This is why foundations are so important. I imagine that Mike Tyson has spent a lot of his recent time working on relearning the foundations of his life, so that he is a functional adult. I’ve spent a lot of time in therapy unlearning the survival mechanisms I developed as a kid that don’t serve me anymore. These survival mechanisms made me into a tough sonofabitch but they also get in the way of the very different world I occupy now.
