I want to open a bookstore in the future. A hermitage that I can share with other people. A place that can be totally life affirming for the right people. Out of all the trappings I jettisoned post-stroke, my record collection, my rocker gear, my drums, various other collections, the buttons wing of GOBLINKO & so many assumptions about the way I & the world works, I haven’t turned back, missed anything… but my love of books, actual paper books & reading has increased & gotten stronger & is possibly growing still the more I study writing. I have made a habit out of reading again & actually read as much as I used to as a kid. It’s great. The key has been to read books that are actually interesting as opposed to assigning myself books like homework. I tried the Ted Turner autobiography & got so tired of it, Katie had to give me permission to stop reading it. Being able to translate a collection of glyphs into ideas, pictures, everything that can build up the kinds of emotions that drive people to change themselves & the world is so tremendously powerful. I have written since I turned eleven or so, but I’ve never considered myself a writer until now. I probably put in my 10,000 hours (Malcolm Gladwell brings up the “10,000 hour rule” in his 2008 book “Outliers: The Story of Success”, asserting that the way to achieve mastery in any skill is practicing for at least 10 000 hours. I read it in Dave Sim’s book “The Cerebus Guide to Self-Publishing” in 1998.) twenty years ago. But still, writing is just something I did, not something I thought about.
