We’ve been running a webstore for a long time but it got serious in 2012 when we realized we could move a lot of stuff with our magazine PORK. We’d table festivals & easily outsell everybody. In 2015, the tone of the country changed & it was harder to get PORK out there & pins & patches were oversaturated. Bare jackets became more commonplace. It was time to pivot. I had realized that I wanted to do some illustrations for an RPG back in 2006 or so & did work for Labyrinth Lord by Goblinoid Games. Labyrinth Lord concentrated on doing OD&D which I appreciate much more than the later polished incarnations of D&D that appeared. What I found myself ready to do in 2016 was launch my own game project DUNGEON DEGENERATES. Originally conceived of as a card battle game, with an intent to drag the high fantasy into the gutter & make this thing about art. DUNGEON DEGENERATES found its first incarnation as a board game. The only way we could fund such a large project was through crowdfunding. It took a while to actually understand the crowdfunding mentality. To make the mental jump from ordinary, daily shop sales to the chunks of money & audience involvement with the project was a huge leap, one that I still need to meditate on all the time! With the success of Hand of Doom (five printings so far) the scale of what GOBLINKO did was forever changed. When we started out selling buttons my mother-in-law rightly commented that we were going to have to sell a lot of buttons. It was true, but we did sell a lot of buttons & went to selling a lot of games. I’ve changed to see the audience as a kind of sounding board for what we’re working on which has been cool to know them in a different way than before.
