I’ve been watching Portland & Multnomah County council meetings for the last year & a half or so. I stopped because I realized that the confines of these meetings were shutting down my imagination for how I want Portland to be. Taking my stuff before the bean-counters or allowing them space in my brain is the last thing I should do when trying to make a change, they should know my plan & be ready for it upon arrival. I had to open up my mind to the full Smörgåsbord of creative options in my head, & I was allowing too much of their boardroom blandness into my mind. One of the things I do is follow structures too rigidly to allow myself to fully go off creatively. That adherence to structure has been one of the reasons I have been able to excel as an artist but it also means that I periodically have had to destroy the scaffolding around me like King Kong to give myself some room to create really new things. Destruction creates room for creation. In this case the destruction was very mild - just stopping a project of learning about Portland politics so that I could do what I do best - give the city some magic. Maybe I had to assure myself that Portland wasn’t content with being a tantrum throwing baby with dirty diapers for as long as it could be until starving & dying. It sounds dramatic, but there is a really suicidal aspect in society these days & I’m not interested in wasting my energy on it. If you haven’t figured out that life is worth living then I don’t know what to say.
