His grounded roles, even though his performance might be better is not what the fans are looking for. It also has to do with what Indians were looking for from their movies in the 90s and 2000s - escapism from the mundane everyday life. They wanted to escape for 3 hours into a world where everything was over the top and larger than life. SRK, who comes from theatre otherwise, realized this early on and adapted accordingly.
