Life&Death

When it comes to Dying, should you have unlimited lives? No matter how many times you die, you would keep respawning at the checkpoint area.
Or maybe having a limited amount of lives would make it more interesting before you get a game over and have to load game from the last save.
I saw some other games that only have 1 live, then game over to load screen, losing all your progress. (Ex. CHASM.)
The idea of losing Soul each time you die comes from the original D&Ds campaign I made.
Which I'm using for this game, and it's because:
-Asgrand, the old God of the resurrection brings you back each time you die.
-You can pay with your soul to access certain areas.
-You can recover your soul on certain Soul fountains.
Of course many of those ideas may not fit on a game.
So, what do you think about it?

Thanks! I think it's cool, since some games just send you to game over screen after 1 single death.
