This is a true story from the children's theater. It must have happened during my first year or two there. I swear I eventually got better at making small talk with children! I've been meaning to turn this anecdote into a comic for years. It was a moment that changed how I think about car crashes. Also, I was tickled by the way each of my attempts to be reassuring backfired even worse than the last one. A couple weeks ago, I had an excuse and a deadline to put pen to paper.
One of my favorite podcasts, The War on Cars, was coming to Portland. The podcast examines our assumptions about the car's central place in American life. They talk about the hidden or ignored costs of driving everywhere, and examine different alternatives around the world. The cartoon--if I drew it in time--would make a great gift for the hosts, Doug Gordon and Sarah Goodyear.
I got to give the original cartoon away at a Bike Happy Hour. Jonathan Maus of BikePortland captured the moment!

Bike Happy Hour is full of very serious, very cute people. In other local news, Naomi and I had a nice visit at her parents' for Thanksgiving.
Naomi sat next to a cool dragon-doodler on the train.

Thanksgiving always ends with folky guitar time in the living room.
