Here's the full story of 'Analog'.
One of my favorite actors, Victor, found an old VHS tape of mine and used a digital camera to screen record some images of my then girlfriend and I. Seeing this I remembered the old VHS film I'd shot in the early 90's with him and Michael amongst the cast. I dug around in my closet and found many of the old tapes that made up this 90's movie. And with the discovery I got the idea for a film, about a woman whose mother did a 90's horror film and vanished. Employing the old footage of Victor and Michael I knew this would add a verisimilitude to the film's theme.
I'd wanted to do an analog horror story - a horror film that appears to be, or is shot on old VHS equipment - for awhile. I just didn't have a plot. And this seemed to totally fit what I needed. I showed Victor and Michael their old footage. Victor took it with a laugh. Michael, oddly, had no recollection of any of the scenes I'd shown him!
We shot 'Analog' on what must have been the coldest day of the year. The outdoor scenes were murder. But it was worth it once I got the footage.
I still want to do another analog horror film. In fact, I've kinda got an idea. But that's a film for 2024.
