The big thing about Ben is that he is a character in Solitaire (which is the original book that Heartstopper is a spin-off from), which takes place a year later than the start of Heartstopper. If they want any part of Solitaire in Heartstopper (or possibly make a movie for Solitaire) they can't mess with Ben's character too much.
