He has reached the plausible conclusion that cultivating increases the threats he faces such that he'll never not be out of his depth, and because of that cultivation will increase the scope of disasters he attracts and endanger everyone around him without giving him any more control. If he was Building Foundation it's entirely possible that this would go from bad even for him to a typical Tuesday, and the upper extremes would be regional catastrophes with body counts in the millions. I don't know if he's right, but it's not an insane conclusion from the evidence and avoiding cultivating is a reasonable response if you do work from that conclusion.

Honestly, congratulations, because I really should have seen this coming by all laws of narrative, with Zhang being introduced as nice and having a wife etc. near Wang's luck, but I still didn't expect things to go to hell this fast. Well. I mean, I guess if he's not paying attention they could just kinda break line of sight and go into Wang's inner world, even if that would leave them stranded in the desert, but I guess it won't be this easy. Because Wang Yonghao. Who totally knew this guy was Bad News but couldn't do shit.Honestly, I do wonder how he's so insistent on not cultivating, if this is his regular life. Anyone else would be motivated to cultivate if faced with this kind of stuff as regularly as he is.
