"Helm of Exhaustion"
Added 2023-03-16 12:04:43 +0000 UTCThis was the first Eco piece i've had the opportunity to work on for a while now with the tail end of game work and the subsequent exhaustion, and it might remain that way as I work through my next batch of commissions, but i'm hoping to set aside some time in the near future for a dedicated set of Eco paintings i've had in mind for a while now.
The "Helm of Exhaustion" here kind of acts as the latest in an informal sub-series within the Eco works of these "helm" or head designs in profile. This one was easily the hardest so far, given that I was battling jetlag at both the start and end of the piece, working on in it in small bursts between the time I landed in Tokyo and the time after I returned.
Working on the 13HD while I was travelling proved harder than I remember - the slight differences in pressure sensitivity and the form factor of the screen being so much more compact alters my process slightly, and my work becomes looser and more expressionistic, less tightly rendered.
That can work both for and against me - for a piece like this, that exists as a kind of freeform experimentation where I can just indulge in whatever patterns and details compel me, it works contrary to the purpose, and my desire to do indulgent sharp detail rendering is slightly confounded. I did get it done eventually though, and the war against my body's desire to be asleep at 3pm every day after we got back lent it the title "Helm of Exhaustion" when it came time to name it.
I *really* hope I feel completely normal again soon lol
