Unfilmable 80: The Thing

Your eyes don't betray you. This isn't some kind of Thing-ified clone of our Bonefireside Chat episode. We reference The Thing a lot and we figured it was time we repay our respects for this legitimate Horror classic. So many modern films owe a debt to The Thing that it seemed unfair that we had not officially covered it on our horror movie podcast. Join us down in Antarctic for a most bone-chilling tale.

Next Month: Weapons (dir. Zach Cregger, 2025)

Unfilmable 80: The Thing

Comments

The Rimworld Anomaly DLC has elements of The Thing to it. Watch out for colonists that are not cooks suddenly preparing meals, or colonist that are not doctors unexpectedly tending to patients!

It also apparently didn’t react to the camera flying around on a dolly like most film dogs do so Carpenter could shoot it In all sorts of interesting ways!

One of my favorite details about the movie is that the dog was played by a wolfdog and that's why the Dog Thing is so strange, even while it's wandering around before anything's happened. It doesn't respond to humans in quite the ways we expect from dogs and has an odd intensity to it.

I need to get the 4K for all the Carpenter movies, especially Escape from New York and this one

Christopher Grunert Pedersen

I was literally looking to see if you'd covered this two days ago

Jake

Wooo!!! Glad to see this notification. Mac as a villain protagonist... That's a cool way of watching it. Also before listening, anyone read "The Things" perspective flip story by Peter Watts?

Jeremy Espinoza

Also, have y'all considered an episode on Underwater? I always thought that would be firmly in the wheelhouse of the show and themes you both seem to enjoy. Totally also get if you don't want reccs from the comments though :)

Blake Waller

I've watched this movie many times as a spooky month tradition, and always love it for pretty much every scene you hit on. Such great tension and effects in this. I actually didn't hate the 2011 Thing, but it's not working on the same level.

Blake Waller

The worst bit about the remake/prequel, which overall I enjoy because it does nearly everything else respectfully in relation to the OG, is that they had shot the whole thing with practical effects akin to the original. There has always been debate over whether the studio felt it was too fucked up looking and wanted it to look more palatable for audiences or if they felt it looked silly and CGI would be taken more seriously, but it is really the sole detractor from what I consider a pretty neat film.

Aha, I was totally convinced in my mind that I'd heard y'all discuss this at some point in the past, then Gary clarified!! Great ep, Unfilmable is always so great

Was having a rough month, seeing this in the feed really cheers me up. Love this movie so much, can't wait to listen to this at work tonight

greyrain

Hell yeah! Been waiting for this.

Ipoop4U

Awesome, was looking forward to this! I also want to say, re: the guns that it should be kept in mind that this was made during the cold war, so they were likely armed "just in case" for that reason.

Matthew Ladwig

Super excited for Weapons! There's a scene during the final struggle that got a belly laugh from me but the rest of the theatre was absolutely silent, very funny horror movie.

Kezia

Turn off your dicks; there's doin's about!

Karsomir

Yeeeeees 😍

Azen Shepard

I've been looking forward to this all month. Combined with Weapons next month, Unfilmable fans are eating good right now.

Malachi McRee

I saw this post and squealed at a frequency only dogs could hear

Ethan Vaughn

If I was at that base I'd be like "how about you imitate a freaking woman to talk to please, I'm dying over here!"

dumbcube

I can’t describe the skip my heart did when I saw this just flash up.

GlasgowBear

Oh shit yeah!

Jonathan
