Unfilmable 79: The Mummy

Our theory is that the mummy is more of a Sorcerer in this one. This 90s oddity is an adventure movie with horror elements, but it's still pretty charming and visually compelling to this day.

The one good thing about the Tom Cruise Mummy remake is that Way Forward made an excellent little metroidvania based on it, The Mummy Demastered. Jeremy Parrish interviewed the lead developer on it and he said that the studio told them to just make whatever they want, so they did.

This was one of the first DVDs I ever owned. Thus, I've seen the movie with director's commentary enough times to know that Benny is supposed to be Hungarian. Is his accent accurate? Should we be offended? Should Hungarians be offended? Who knows!

Timothy Post

The thing about the sequel is that it's bigger and dumberer and eschews any bit of character writing to just start with the mummy action right away. It's not as good but still a well made action adventure movie with that same charisma. Maybe not worth another episode but a fun watch if you like.

Van Helsing fucking owns. Granted I was like 12? 10? When it came out. Loved it. And for a while it was the only cinematic thing that reminded me of Bloodborne, back in 2016-18.

Fun thing about the end of summer of treats coming down to either Thing or Alien is that those are two of the best looking movies ever made. PS, Obed Fehr, who plays Ardeth in mummy, also played Carlos in Resident Evil Apocalypse.

Also speaking of rewatch im glad y'all are doing The Thing again!! maybe my favorite horror movie!! i could listen to people gush about The Thing forever

Such a wonderful movie. I'm glad you two don't feel restricted by the premise of the podcast that you can't do movies like this. I definitely would love to see more in this vain of film. Also in regards to Van Helsing, a movie I have great affection for from my youth, it is certainly not as good as the Mummy but has some delightfully outlandish performances and great if goofy special effects. Probably the closest thing we will ever get to a live action Castlevania.

Yaaayyy! One of my faves! So excited to listen
