not even that, this programming code sems made by the higher ups. we have to remember that not even the engineers knew where to find it, they wanted the robots to act out, they wanted to teh engineers to not find the issue, and when plenty of people complains, uh oh, looks like we have to make a new robot to appease our shareholders and CEO
this was planed by the veeeeeeeerry top

On the bright side she belongs to a family consisting of a big shot lawyer and a marketing executive and her disappearance has greatly affected the family.... Marketing, as in how to make something seem appealing? Lawyers, as in potential legislation and how to properly navigate the law? Hmmm smells like robo civil rights might be right around the corner. And you bet that all the bots will not stand by peacefully after hearing about this new robo cancer the companies are pushing. As John f Kennedy once said "Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable"

2024-05-03 05:10:52 +0000 UTC
Worse yet. When you really think about it, the company basically gave her and her nandoird friends the equivlent of robot cancer just to make a buck. Scarier thought... given that Emmie is a gen 1 nandroid. The word legacy in "legacy EOL protocal" for gen 1 bot would imply ALL the Stirling bots have this. Not just the nandroid line (Well mabey not military bots. You typically dont want to piss off the folks who make the laws). Also, Puts a new spin on that moment in the strling tv spot part 2 when I that bot on display malfunctioned in front of Mr Stirling and he stared intensely at it then mentioned something about failure leads to success. That must be when the idea came to him. (That's right I think Stirling is a Thomas Edison. Stole credit from brighter minds .. who was that lab coat guy with Stirling in all those old photos?)
JoeMcGoe
2024-05-03 05:03:24 +0000 UTC
Nah this is intentional by the business. Notice the problem code is in a directory called life cycle and in a folder within that directory called EOL. EOL means end of life. This is "we are no longer providing updates for window 8" situation. The why? Money. They want inconivince gen 1 owners so they can sell you gen 2.
JoeMcGoe
2024-05-03 04:58:53 +0000 UTC
The scary thing is it's only malware to the user and the bots perspective. For Stirling, she's functioning exactly as intended, which would be why the engineers never found anything when running routine diagnostics on her. Most likely if the did decide to run a code trace and make a dev ticket about it, they would find this was feature a requested by the business and there is nothing they could do short of a model upgrade.

It’s called programmed obsolescence. It’s like planned obsolescence, except it’s designed in The hardware of the product.

Remember that tiny disclaimer in the commercial WAY BACK in the first episode that the *nandroids DONT operate indefinitely*? Apparently the nandroids CAN operate just fine for seemingly longer than they’re advertised, but the company wants their customers to keep buying. They purposely made the update for the nandroids that are built too dang well to “break down” and to make way for their replacement model ready for purchase. And so they’ll send an “update” to that model in 5-6 years again for the newer model and the cycle goes on. 🤔

Funnily enough, Apple was caught doing exactly that self-sabotage thing with updates to old iPhones to push people into buying new ones.
Also, eff yeah Python!!
Makes me wonder what kind of OS the nandroids run. Maybe a bespoke proprietary OS? Or maybe it's Linux? Are nandroids actually humanoid Android devices? The thick plottens!
In fact, now that I think about it, Darcy's computer gives me the vibes of a late 80's to early 90's Macintosh with an Apple Portrait Display (like this one https://www.reddit.com/r/VintageApple/comments/os76q9/the_macintosh_portrait_display_one_of_my_favorite/). I don't know if that's intentional but I love the idea anyway!

Oh man... this is getting really intense now! If "Upper-Upper Management" is anything to go by, I smell a case of not only planned obsolescence, but self-sabotage as well! I now worry for Molly, Amy, Franny, Polly and the rest of the nandroids is this somehow effects them, too. Looks like Sterling has a lot to answer for. But still, this is intense!

it wasn’t darcy’s fault, emmy’s code was intentionally programmed to glitch at random. most think its due to planned obsolescence but i guess we’ll find out

I felt physically uneasy for a moment when I read Emmy'd be deleted in 30 seconds. It got me so worried! Now I've been looking at previous episodes for about an hour thinking just what could be happening.
I have a theory right now but not to spam I'll just say I feel there's something going on when reading back to back 'Results', 'We Have a Problem (2)', 'Upper-Upper Management' (specially this one) and 'Hacking'.
Anyway, I'm pleasantly surprised as several times before by this wonderful story!

Theory time! Reading the randomized options, it seems like Emmy was hit with a motor corruption localized to her arm. The randomization might be part of an attempt to obfuscate any deliberation in the glitch, to make it seem like a freak thing every time it happens. Probably only a handful of robots got a glitch too, as to not harm the overall brand. Keeping incidents unrelated seems like the best way to roll this out. Even the other robots have blamed Emmy for the malfunction.
Makes me wonder though, if Emmy stayed with the engineers who were trying to figure out her glitch, would they have uncovered this the same way Darcy did? Or would Sterling have special protocols in place to misdirect their own engineers? Was the plan to say ‘whoops! What a fluke!’ and then sell the family an upgraded Emmy with old Emmy’s memories loaded in? (I’ve been super paranoid of that ever since rereading the early episodes…)
Super scared/excited to see where this leads! (But first please let Emmy’s memories be alive)
