Episode 20 - Girls Generation and what happened with Jessica Jung!

YEARS of speculation and conspiracies, now I'm going to add in some of mine haha.

I hope one day we get answers and some closure because as a fan of these iconic 9 women, I still think day to day, what could've been? What went wrong? Who voted Jessica out? What the issue at heart?

Happy 18th!

i was a hardcore sone in 2014, but really wasnt old enough to be interested in online forums at the time. so there couldve been more bts stuff going around that i wasnt aware of. but as a fan who kept up with their activities closely, her exit was such a shocker. like jess was my ult bias. i was aware that she wanted to start b&e, but had no notion of her wanting to leave the group. when her letter went out i felt blindsided for a number of reasons—first of all bc i thought (at least a good number of the girls) supported her business. she gave them sunglasses from her brand a some of them posted them online and publicly supported her. secondly, it felt like most of the other members were starting to feel out what there future careers were gonna be like post-snsd. not in the sense that they were gonna disband, but they were too big and too old of a group to be scrambling across korea to be performing at a bunch of events like they used to at their prime. the past two years they had a comeback in the beginning of the year, did the gamut of regular promos, had an asian or jpn tour, and then had the rest of the year for their individual work. yoona, yuri, sooyoung, and jess all acted in at least one drama at this point. sunny and jess did musicals. we all expected taeyeon to come out with her solo debut soon. taetiseo already debuted. i really did not think the girls would hold resentment for others for branching out bc i thought that they all wanted to. thirdly, exo and fx were already going through dramatic lineup changes that year. sulli’s hiatus effectively ended red light promos (which killed all the momentum the success of pink tape started). and kris and luhan both sued and left exo. so it seemed weird that sm decided to also throw one of their stalwart titans into that turmoil. the timing of it all was so questionable. like why did it have to be done so quickly and in such a way that jessica felt the need to say that she was blindsided. and all the smtown stans knew that a new gg was coming. we all knew that a group with irene wendy and seulgi was coming because smrookies was really picking up steam. so we (at least i) expected snsd to not be such a priority for sm and to kick out a member for not prioritizing the group seemed hypocritical. im not saying she was done horribly wrong by the comapny and the other girls bc in order for her to be kicked out (mind you, none of the departed suju members were ever kicked out and you could argue sungmin and kangin’s actions were actually harmful to group activites and reputation) something drastic need to have come up. but it was truly unexpected.

I’m trying to catch up on your content because I’ve been so busy recently but I really am so glad you started doing these podcasts - you are so articulate and have such a good way with words and your voice is so easy to listen to, I could listen to you talk about anything! I never really knew the whole story of what went down with GG so this was very interesting, it reminds me of how much I long for the day that idols start doing tell-all memoirs/docs so we can really see what goes on in the industry behind closed doors - don’t think I’ll hold my breath on that but a girl can dream

It’s also worth noting that 2014 was around the time of their contract renewals, and I’m sure you’re aware of the infamous 7-year curse? Lmao. Maybe Jessica & SM were actually planning to part ways amicably, but Jessica (allegedly) prioritizing her other business ventures while she was actively promoting with SNSD probably strained her relationship with the company & the other girls. Jessica was easily the most ambitious member of the group imo, and when you combine that with her supposed lack of enthusiasm/laziness on stage, I can absolutely see the other members feeling some type of way.
