September '25 Update

Hi guys. This month I am doing some long needed research into the issue of motor heating. I am also aiming to get an early, early alpha for my 2-axis brushless device out soon.

Designing SSR1 has been a very interesting experience because whilst the device only has one axis it has exposed me to a whole range of engineering problems that need to be solved, or at least understood. This is especially true if we want to build a device that is effectively multiple SSR1s working together to create multi-axis movements.

The more time I spend looking into SSR1 and its drive train the more I begin to appreciate the physics associated with it. I've recently done some theoretical calculations and these have led me to an understanding that heat is something that needs to be managed rather than avoided. This is why I need to do a bit more research.

I have got together some temperature sensors and it's my intention to run some tests. I think that this will actually work well for some livestreams so my plan for my Supporter ($2) tier patrons is to stream the experiments live on discord and YouTube. I don't know exactly when yet but I will give at least 24 hours notice, and of course the streams will be available to watch afterward.

The other thing that I'm working on this month is my 2-axis brushless motor driven device–SSR2. I'm quite excited about this, because I think I've come up with quite a novel and elegant way to combine stroke and twist on one device. Because this device will be a hands-free mounted device it will also be quite unlike any other device that's come before too, which is something else I quite like.

I would like to get a very early Alpha design of this device out to my Maker ($8) tier patrons on 1st October. That may be a stretch, so I might have to settle for putting out a preview and a parts list and following that up with STLs as and when they are ready. We'll see.

I think you guys will like this thing. Assuming that it works as well as I'm expecting it to! I have done trials of similar setups before but there are some new and untested elements to this particular design.
