Early Look: An update on our long term plans, plus a small rant

Hey, we just got back from our trip the other day- proper video recipes will be coming soon, promise (we've got three coming up that we're quite excited about).

With this one, we sort of wanted to share some longer term interests of ours food-wise, stuff that takes... a little explaining. Because last year there was a reason we chose Thailand specifically - there's a good bit of relevance to the Chinese cuisines we've been most fascinated about.

In any event, hope this one isn't over-sharing, but yeah.

The practical and arguable clearest (seriously, best I've ever seen) Chinese cooking videos are why I started watching your channel, but; the cultural exploration, the history, you two, your dog, and basically everything your channel is, is why I stay. I came here to say the same thing! It’s interesting because I’ve never thought of “exotic” as a negative label, but it really is inherently divisive. Steph and Chris have definitely helped reduce exoticism and normalize Chinese food (and Chinese culture more broadly) for me, and I’m looking forward to following along on this next leg of the journey!

Putting aside your anthropological exploration plan (as rad as it is), I do love your point of how “learning a language reduces exoticism and normalises things”. I’m pretty sure I’ve been guilty of doing that to other cultures outside my own growing up. Thus, I feel what you’re doing is a really good idea to help truly engage with recipes and cooking: not only thinking but truly empathising with the dish in the context it is made. This is great news! When we were in Northern Thailand we were amazed at the variety of Chinese originated ethic minorities and that's a much more recent phenomenon than what you're showing here, so this is super exciting and hope you feel free and supported by the community to explore these avenues of research!
