It's a Trap! 012: Hawkins Hand Trap

Drill some holes in the shelf for your fingers so you can actually grasp it. When you're no longer struggling to keep it from flying out of your hand, you'll be able to get a decent throw out of it...

1922=Great Depression?

TRP

I'm looking at my baseboards with a new eye to the possibilities...

good thing the nails are THAT centered! lol... did they came up with a baking form to save on clays on top back then? needs a longer board for more leverage maybe, with centered nail. to nail it. very important.

Guido Schriewer

Looked at most of the throws in 'finger tapping slow mo' and as far as I can tell the good ones have the trap edge flat on to the direction of throw and the bad ones are at an angle. Basically the knack seems to be keep the clay flat to the direction of movement for the whole throw.

I'd stick a strip of rubber on the inside of the lip.

I can't help but wonder if that thing would be easier to use if the end was actually shaped a bit so you could grip it properly. Isn't "shelf that gets flicked" basically description of how a modern spring trap works?

Chris Crowther

I love that you guys tossed twice as many clays with the scrap lumber special as with any others to date ;)

Wayne Dygert

I can see that you could modernize this for 2021 by putting a small block or nub on the underside to help hold onto it and 3D printing a clay holder so that the release is consistent.

That trap needs a handle, wouldn't have been hard to add one without needing more pieces of wood.

“Mae, what’s the most relaxing thing you can think of?” “Well I was thinking about cheese”

Drew Rebhorn

That was high-larious. And as an engineer and a woodworker, the nail placement was spot on for that assembly.

Matt Lohafer

A camera angle in here made me realize how small Mae is compared to the guys. Holy cow. I'd like to say I would throw it well, but fear I would be Othias-like. Glad to see you having some fun.

Swiss and OJ, its a thing. Albeit, not one most could palette enjoyably! Strongly recommend instead, Swiss on butter/pan toasted Rye, a nicely cured slice of ham with several drops of Texas Pete Sabor and a thin swipe of mayo and deli mustard!

The worse the traps, the better the videos. I think they're all putting too much attack at the beginning of the throw. Don't jerk it.

Oh, thank God for the $5 wally'world hydrocarbon based festively colored clay flingers! A learning curve that even the most brain'dead alcohol augmented redneck dunce can master in 60 seconds or less! Ain't modern technology grand? By comparison! A true example of "the bad old days"! Thank you's guys for shining the spotlight on just how miserable an existence our forefathers suffered! Or was it perhaps that Winchester was simply invested heavily in clay-pigeon manufacturing and marketing back then???

Mustafa's Fleas

I think with Othais his comfortable throwing motion is starting at his shoulder and finishing about his waist. It seems with this one since it doesn’t have anything really holding it down the clay doesn’t stabilize when thrown like that. I wonder if adding a bit of a lip to the top would help hold them down. This design seems similar to what the modern mechanical clay throwers do. They’ve got a track that the clay slides into then gets flung out of.

Have a contest to see if someone can make one with modifications to make it work better. For example, would it work better if it is longer? How about adding a system to hold the target better until it launches? Put some kind of handle on it so you can throw it better.

Gary

Swiss and orange juice?

Charles Adams

Your timing is impeccable. This is just what I needed mid-finals week.

It's a better Monday, there's a new trap video!
