On the handguard and heat thing. . . I'm kinda thinking that given the prevalence of barbed wire and chemical weapons, gloves may have been worn more often than not, so this would have still been a problem, but maybe not as severe as supposed. Berthier over Lebel - - much less thinking and fiddling.
