I would argue that the soviet ended up following the same pattern as the french...

Thanks! Sadly we work well in advance.

It definitely parallels with the DMR

I sent you bio data for Meunier and Rossignol early this week just in case you do an episode on their rifles.

Bertrand Ludovic

Yepee it’s there!

Bertrand Ludovic

Great episode thanks~

The emphasis on technical skill as well as marksmanship to be an RSC gunner is interesting. I don't know about the current rubric, but when I enlisted in 1986 the US Army used the General Technical (GT) score from the ASVAB as the break point for various MOS. Even Infantry required a minimum GT score or 60. If you were to dumb to use a hammer you were to dumb for the Infantry. I wonder if it was because of the relative complexity of self loading rifles and the need for the shooter to quickly determine if a malfunction could be cleared now or the weapon would have to go to an armorer. I certainly know people who are completely oblivious to such concerns. "Muh gun stopped workin" and no idea why or what to do about it is not what you want on a battlefield.

When is a Garand. . .not a Garand? I'm thinking John Cantius earned himself a plagiarism point or two. . . Historical Vegetables. . .heee!

@ 53:30 -- "...only issue to one person in the squad." IE - they ended up establishing the same pattern that the Soviets would end up following in WW2 w/ the SVT 40, w/ NCOs having the surplus processing capacity [brain power] to take care of them & use them effectively. ;-)

@ ~46:00 -- Othais, they put the cap on the back because even the most novice of the engineers involved knew that there would inevitably be bolt failures, & w/o the cap on the back of the action you'd have dead soldiers whenever that happened. See "Ross rifle bolt reassembly" for more details on what happens when troops lose confidence in their weapons... ;-)

@ 38:53 -- "still, it worked. Browning points all around..." Othais, to earn Browning points, it doesn't merely have to *work*, it has to work *reliably*, and become an archetype for guns that come along later that copy one or more of its features! X-D

Gotta say, I enjoy Mae's voice-over for the animation: not that I don't like the sound of Othais' voice [great timbre, my man!] but just a break in the sameness of Othais doing all the voice-over work provides some added mental awareness [what can I say, I'm a borderline narcoleptic; my tendency to drift off in long meetings is legendary!] :-)

Been looking forward to this. Ian's videos of the RSC are great, so your deep dive into it will be a real treat!

YAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSS, got home from work just in time
