Week in Review

By the clock it's Thursday, but I tend to work nights mostly.  Less distraction.  Last time we talked about the macro.  I'll try to dial in a little further this week. Currently I'm supposed to be pulling the show ahead in terms of production, but I keep getting sidetracked.  Here, in no particular order, are things on my mind for the past week.

1. I spent several days negotiating a trade for a rare piece.  Had an agreement, he was supposed to ship on Monday... and cancelled.  No re-negotiation or anything, just straight noped out.  First time it has ever happened to me.  No, I'm not saying who or what, that's their business.

2. I keep trying to imagine ways to seal vintage shotgun cartridges in resin but still show the powder and primer when I cut them in half.  This seems kinda dangerous in addition to being tricky but I should just start trying methods with modern ammo.  However, gotta find the time first.

3. On the same note, I joined a local makerspace to try out new tools and methods.  Again, I never get time to get over there.  However, I did realize if I could just find and borrow a buttplate for a Young Repeating Shotgun I could use a vacuum former to rapidly make a mold to cast a replacement.  Heck, if I could get a photo I'd make it out of wood and do the same to get a plastic cast.   I'm also curious if I could use vacuum formed plastics to make consumable en-bloc clips.  I guess it depends if I can find a rigid enough plastic.  3D printing is out due to the thickness/strength issue.

4. The seat heater keeps turning itself on at random on the "new" Suburban.  Also running two particular Adobe softwares at once sometimes corrupts my mouse cursor.  But only on my second monitor... until I restart my machine.  How. Why?

5. I really enjoyed riding out West last year and need to go to Cody this summer, I wonder if I should drive and if I do, should I trailer a bike and take extra days off to do a PWN course on two wheels?  How the heck would I make 2 weeks in my schedule for that?  I nearly died of exhaustion taking less time last year.

6. Mark fixed the Winchester 1897 Trench we got in, so now I gotta make some decisions about replica ammo.  I'm wondering if I can prove the swelling issue somehow without ruining collectible ammo.  I hate consuming original stuff.

7. We got the last Colt revolver we needed, so we can do the 1917 episodes soon.  Just gotta make film time.   Will be nice to have two episodes in a row using common ammo and English language sources only.

8. I've been tinkering with some possible shirt designs.  The first is just about right, but needs test printing and the 2nd in incomplete but I wanted to do some color testing before I kept at it.

9. I watched Season 2 of The Tick on Amazon with Taofledermaus while working on illustrations.  He's my TV buddy.

10. Why does this US Chauchat run better than any of the French ones?

11. I made a call on Facebook for anyone in NW PA tonight and a stranger is now going to hit an auction for me this week to snag, hopefully, another piece for the series.  I love people in this community!  (yes we're paying him back, yes it goes through a 4473 to us)

12. On that note the secret shotgun chat on our Discord is my favorite chat.  The rest of our own Discord kinda weirds me out.

13. If you're in Charleston there is a hole-in-the-wall Brazilian Bakery Buffet I tried this week.  Very unassuming but delicious and inexpensive.  Ok, "dive" might be the word and I don't speak a lick of Portuguese.  Still delicious.

Some people were concerned about missing out on Instagram, so I'll link them here.  You can see them without an account.  I'll try to make this a weekly thing.

Also, there are some overflow and misprint shirts at the shop now.   https://candrsenal.com/shop/

I know that's a lot of random data but let me know if you all like or hate getting these sorts of dumps on just what is going on.  Obviously lots more consistent research, editing, etc is going on, just hitting the things that stand out from the norm.

Also, take a moment to share any cool finds you might have had this week!  Maybe read some of the other comments!  I'll set aside time on Sunday to make it through everything posted.

Current ammo is much more advanced even when replicating the old stuff. We're hoping to show some of the weird things they came up with.

C&Rsenal

Always appreciate the updates. Stupid question time. Rather than deal with collector ammo, is there some reason that current production paper shells (such as made by Federal) wouldn't work for the test? I don't have any shells from WWI, but do have some from the 1930s and they are waxed paper just like Federal's are today. I'm relatively certain that a week or two in the wet would swell modern paper shells just like the wet conditions on the front in WWI.

Richard Anderson

Thanks! Those help a lot because we've already paid for them!

C&Rsenal

Purchased an additional t-shirt from the overflow ones just to give you a chance to get off Ramen for a meal.

Kevin R

Np all good. Can't be everywhere on the internet at once....but you're getting close.

ah, I should have read this first

C&Rsenal

Two down, two more to go on the design work.

C&Rsenal

Sometimes I'm literate.

C&Rsenal

You are doing it all right. Glad you found someone up here to help. Ever need anything in Erie, PA, hit me up.

I vote yes for these kinds of updates. Love the the "War Were Declared" shirt design with Crozier and - YES! - Patented Plastic Pokies! Put me down for one. Also, thanks for the links to the images on Instagram. Very cool stuff. Keep up the good work!

Kent W.Fevurly

I weirdly love crates and bags and stuff. Can't horde it though with a tiny home.

C&Rsenal

Thanks for the update! Love this. My wife and I love supporting you and watching your show. As for cool finds of the week, I found a mosin rifle crate im going to make into a coffee table, and found a shop with a Kropatschek bayonet in case I ever need one for me or a friend. If your ever in Northeast Indiana we would love to meet you!

Timothy Billow

so all that design work fo nothing...

C&Rsenal

thanks for the support!

C&Rsenal

Yes, yes War Were Declared! Just that in plain text would be effective enuff to show in a gun culture environment like a range or whatever.

Thanks for the updates.

Terry Rindal Jr

correct.

C&Rsenal

Our apologies for ruining the market.

C&Rsenal

Glad you're enjoying it!

C&Rsenal

This is my feeling but everyone else seems to like red on white

CROZIER SHIRT!!!

Amigo1016

Sitting out on my back porch by the pool drinking a cup of joe. I know 11am is kinda late but I’m a late night, early morning go to bed kinda guy. Guess I should be looking for updates before I crash. But I do appreciate the communication and time it takes. Keep up the good work. Can’t wait for the 1917’s. I’ve acquired a Victory .38 lately, but those 1917’s are so collectible and expensive. Your show is just gonna make it harder to find one!

Seagunner

This kind of weekly update is great. Nice to be kept in the loop of what's going on behind the scenes.

TheBigOne0305

like the black boarder a little more, its not as hard to read.

privetkillzs

Could be! I have yet to get a list going of who made what sort of ammo in each era. Might want to hold them until I know what we need.

C&Rsenal

We enjoy you!

C&Rsenal

They do! My thought was with a reuseable mold I could easily make a few spare for any other modified ones that turn up, sharesies! Also I just kinda want to find a practical use for vaccuum forming on the show.

C&Rsenal

Honestly? I cant wait to have some episodes proven wrong. That will mean research has advanced!

C&Rsenal

Monochrome is winning the most favor

C&Rsenal

I am considering taking a commercial 97 and fitting it with a plastic tube, gotta see if the diameter exists

C&Rsenal

Have no fear, these are 2 of 4 hopefull designs so Crozier will only be on 1/4. We wanted him on just one due to popular demand.

C&Rsenal

It feels like a loop most days

C&Rsenal

love you.

C&Rsenal

Maker spaces are hella neat. I signed up for 3 slots for our team to get a wider tool set. See if they have one near you.

C&Rsenal

Suzie says she is heading the heater issue so I am going to be patient. I was think switch panel mihht need scrubbed as it seems worse on rainy / wet days and, to my knowledge, the relay is more central and less likely to be affected. But those are my two big areas of curiosity for sure.

C&Rsenal

I will name you Speak. Because that's what you do.

C&Rsenal

I have 2 box of old 12 gauge shells I think from the 30s that are of paper variety if those would help you out give an address and I'll send them out.

Definitely on the list. I am also curious if I can replicate the issue with a clear tube and Charleston humidity.

C&Rsenal

Sure, email us and I will get a look as soon as I get a spot of free time!

C&Rsenal

This 1,000. Especially since most social media now outs you as having "seen" the message.

C&Rsenal

Don't sell yourself short, everyone is a litgle creepy!

C&Rsenal

I enjoy these immensely.

3. A buttplate should be pretty easy to CNC mill out of wood, plastic, or aluminum. If your maker space has a CNC router you could probably do something out of wood or delrin fairly easily, if you know how to use CAM software. If you want some help let me know, I also have a mill and could give it a shot if you have a CAD model or a photo with dimensions.

Joe Venzon

I have great confidence in you and your excellent work. You have my continued financial support such as it is. In my humble opinion each episode is brick in the pyramid of Firearms history. Posterity will name your endeavors as a monument to every soldier who ever served in the Great War.

A Pete Bingham

The t-shirt designs look great. Especially the monocrome small arms society and the war were declared one.

Thomas Pigott

PAPER SHOTGUN SHELLS FOR THE '97: Federal still makes paper trap loads in their "Gold Medal Grand" line. I'd suggest (beg) that you test the wet, swelling cartridge concept in a Mossberg 500/590 for the simple fact that when the inside of the magazine tube rusts, you can heat up the factory Loctite, unscrew it, and mount a new one.

Erik

Quite a bit done in one week. As far as the shirts go, the first is great, but (despite how great Crozier is) I am not sold on him being on the second shirt. However, that is just my opinion.

David Clark

Glad to be kept in the loop.

Lord Chaos

Love these!

In no particular order, on riding while exhausted 7 or 8 years ago at age 63 I scheduled a two week vacation to see the freak show (I've never been to Sturgis). My job was sufficiently intense to require 3 weeks of intensive prep work before taking off. Made it about 30 miles from home before laying down a 1500 wing at 70 mph on I-40. Didn't get to finish the trip but I did get a free replacement helmet from the manufacturer and an interesting set of conversation starter scars. In retrospect riding exhausted might not be the best idea... On the Suburban activating the seat heater probably happens by providing a ground to the circuit. I can foresee a fair amount of wire tracing looking for abraded insulation in your future. If an auction requires attending in western NC area I could probably force myself to go look at old guns on your behalf. Now I'm gonna have to look up vacuum forming...

Wayne Dygert

For #2...checkout crafted ballistics on Instagram. They do the resin casting your talking about, and would know how to answer your question about the powder. I dont think they use actual powder but I dont know what they use. They first design for the shirts and of course the third design. Check out your relay for the burb...have had relays do weird things before and if one side of the switch is failing internally you could have something like that. If it has an old school toggle switch pull one wire off of it and see if it's that, simple quick and dirty way to test the switch. Just my ideas on the burb issue.

Bryan Sportel

Speaking as a fellow "Tick" fan may I just say..."Spoon!"

John S Wren

#6. Look at places like ballistic products or precision reloading. They may have already loaded ammo in paper hulls, or at least have the paper hulls for handloading. I don't know if modern paper hulls would have the same issues as vintage ones. Anyway vintage paper shotgun shells are sketchy as to whether they are duds or if they split the brass on firing.

David K. Jernigan

Well if you ever need anyone in NW Arkansas to go to auction for you hit me up. This week I got me a large photograph of Prussian Artillery battery in the field artillery regiment Nr.35 from around 1900. The Regiment did serve in WWI under the German XX Corps. But in front of the men is what I believe is 4 reichsrevolvers among various shells, fuses, helmets, swords, holsters and axes. The two reichsrevolvers you can very clearly see I think is the M1879 and a M1883 revolvers. Last sentence in the battery company motto is "Give Way, The Cannons are coming!. Could I send pictures of the photograph to see if you think its reichsrevolvers?

James G. Jones

I'm glad someone else does the "work at nights and weekends, when no-one else is working, because then people don't interrupt you" thing.

Chris Crowther

I love reading this! And I would definitely enjoy this weekly. Though, to be honest I am probably one of the most dedicated and enthusiastic followers. Just....without the creepiness part. I love history and love what you guys do. Thanks!
