The Primer series is constrained by 3 factors:

1. My skill as a researcher and administrator

2. The Budget

3. Time

When we started the show the emphasis was on #3. I just burned hundreds of hours to get it done, brute forcing my way through software I barely understood.

As we've grown I've gotten better at planning and execution. YOU patrons brought in #2 (not YouTube advertising) and it's been huge because that gave us Bruno, and room to subsidize Mark and Jay, etc. Budget let's us buy Skilled people, who free up my Time.

But, sadly, there is a limit. I still handle a LOT of the production and I'm only one man. With all these big, complicated episodes lately I've managed to keep at or above 100 hours a week on average since November. There's just always been something that needed doing NOW. So, frankly, I've run out of the one resource I cannot make more of: Time.

That said, we've managed 75 episodes every other week without fail! 150 weeks of continuous effort and no 2 days off in a row! So I certainly hope we won't lose anyone if we replace the Primer in two weeks with a very hefty Q&A.

Leave your questions at the link and we'll try to hit as many as possible in a one hour block. Sorry if we don't get them all.

When we come back, I'm thinking it's time to talk about the early Mausers in detail, assuming all goes well.

And a question for Mark. You are obvious a very talented Gun smith. But do you feel that you have learned much over the time you have worked with all these over 100 years old and odd fire arms in the primer series?

I'm curious as to how you put your team together. Did you all find yourselves in a bar three years ago looking for a project to consume your lives for little to no pay? Did Suzie take a class in college on how to rangle a ragged unemployed lumberjack? Was Mark hosting radio show dishing out folksy wisdom as the Dr. Phil of the Carolinas? Was Mae working as an armed escort for a mall Santa while disguised as an Elf?

I would like to know if you are planning to print and sell any books about all the firearms you have done episodes about, would be nice to have something more lasting than videos on youtube to acompany the the 1912 roumanian Steyr-Hahn you tricked me to buy =) Greetings from, Sweden

Frankly your (awesome) videos come out faster than I can watch them. I'll take quality over quantity every time. Keep making outstanding videos, put them out when they are done. Thank you!

Relax, take care of yourself. I'm not aware of a requirement to run yourself into the ground. I prefer your high standards to some "imagined" requirement, that isn't necessary for my support, of quantity of output.

Othais, no-one can work flat out for ever, it becomes counterproductive and then the quality inevitably suffers or you start to lose your enjoyment of what you make, and that would be a real shame. Obviously you should schedule some downtime... frankly I would suggest scheduling yourself a regular break, say every three months, just to keep yourself fresh. As far as I can see everyone on here wants you to be able to sustain this work for the long haul, so it follows that you need to adjust your work rate to a sustainable level. Best wishes to you and your co-creators!

Your rewiew of the italian guns was at the same positive and rational, thank you; i'm Italian of course; so my question is: why you think was chosen the Manlicher clip wen by 1889 the superior Mauser sistem was avalaible? Thank you very much again for your work.

Matteo Manino

This is fine, is the quality to make the show wonderfull.

Matteo Manino

Take as much time as you need, man. It's about putting out the best possible content, not killing yourself to crank out vid after vid. We'll stay onboard.

Othais, you are way too damn polite. Southerners... ;)

General Jack Ripper

Good idea, everybody needs a break occasionally. Probably ought to considering making it an annual thing.

Randy Reid

Would much rather see every firearm video done 100% than to hurry it up because of some deadline I believe these videos will be used years to come as detailed history that is also entertaining

Take the rest of the month's Patreon cash and hit the Caymans for a week of sun, sea and mojitos. You deserve it.

Personally I feel like I'm paying for a premium product.. this is like the Kingsman outfitting shop for Youtube channels I'd rather get it good at your usual standard than more often at a lesser standard

If you're like me, and I know that I am, you appreciate quality over quantity. That said, I want more! More, I tells ya! When it's, convenient, OK?

I must be blind, I can't find a link for questions. Is there any chance of more detail on 37mm Maxim Pom-Poms? I suspect you would not be able to test-fire one of those.

Martin Morehouse

Take a break, fer cryin' out loud. Fire up the Suburban, point the nose in a direction that won't drown you too quick and go. Given C&Rsenal's vast, loyal fanbase, y'all could probably couch-surf your way to Seattle. Put together a "Thank You" clip episode of all the meet&greets. You're the rock stars of WW1 firearms video documentaries, it's high time to go on tour and act like rock stars.

Edward Brush

Ditto Ed. You have long since exhausted the low hanging fruit, and are deep in to the Amazon mystery fruit. Won't change my patronage one bit if I get one deeper, more informative episode on a very unique weapon every two weeks instead of A "well, the best I could do this quick" episode once a week. Heck, each of you (including Mark) could just do a 20 minute "autobiography", and most of us would really enjoy that. What's your background? Education? what fuels the passion for history and guns? How did you and Mae meet? :) That would cover a month or two of alternate weeks.

I think I speak for most, when I say we value quality over quantity. So far you have given us both, but we would much rather you be healthy and happy, than beating yourself into the ground to make some arbitrary deadline. Hell, take a week or two off. Do a Q&A once a month. Whatever works. We are going nowhere!

I became a patron because of thr quality of your work, not the quantity. Take a break, do a few q&a's. This will keep the quality top notch.

jason mahoney

Take a break. Relax. Come back refreshed. It's cool.

James Bond

Take all the time you need. Honestly, I don't see how you have kept with the schedule uninterrupted this long.

Joey

My question is when do you guys think you will reach ww2 content? Do you have any estimation. And thank you so much for what you do!

You have done amazing work!!! For Q&A I really want to know what unusual designs or engineering from WWI or earlier is being rediscovered today. Like the rotary bolt design, some person saw how a problem was solved earlier and now applies it in a new way.

Michael Silverman

Enjoy the time off! I'm not going any where! The content is too good. Heck, I'd be happy with one of your in-depth high quality videos every 3 or 4 weeks.

Jason

Great idea! Were there any Gatling guns in the war?

Old Man Winter

Hey the world dont end! Carpfishing season has started in sweden anyway so take your time and get some rest

Erik

Man, I work a 40 hour week and can barely drag myself to a 3 hour shift at my second job... you want to take a break you've earned it! Besides, the Q and A sounds like fun!

Nicholas Ford

Take some time off.... Life is short. The Q & A would be great.

Greg Bastian

Other channels: "Yeah let's do a Q&A once a month because that's easy content to make and frees up time for us so we can bum about and play vidyagaems occasionally." , Othias:"Ohgawdohgawd I really hope the audience won't run away in fear if we do an Q&A after 7500 hours of busting my balls for them and finding super-rare gurns because now we won't do a regular show even though we've been going for longer and providing better info than Tales of the Gun" - Seriously though, you've been working so brutally hard on this that it's insane and I highly doubt anyone will truly walk away saying that you've let them down. If anything we've been wanting to see you take a Q&A-break for a while, just to make sure you're not literally working yourself to death over this. You, Mae and the crew take some time to breathe without feeling the full pressure of those deadlines weigh down on you. If anyone has earned that, it's you lot.

Benjamin de Groot

Well done

A Pete Bingham

I'm with you, brother, whatever the scheduling turns out to be. The quality of your work is why I support you, and the time frame is not of great importance to me. Rest, relax, breathe...

Samuel Schiller

Actually, one of the reasons I try to watch the new episodes as soon as they come out is to watch the comments and updates that come at the end. Whole episodes of Q&A would be worth my time to watch if the inevitable snark doesn't get you and Mae down. Keep going at a rate that is sustainable

Lynn Phillips

I also would be fine with a once a month schedule. 100 hours a week will either kill you or destroy your health/family if you do it long enough. Sounds like it has been long enough. I will stay with you as a patron when/if you stretch out the time between episodes.

Bruce Stein

you can not loose me as long as teh work keeps going, harder and rarer guns taking longer, is normal taking a week off or 2 as long as we are well informed not a problem. go for it.

privetkillzs

100 hour weeks....been there, done that, not worth it in the long run. There is no rebate program for beating yourself to death and only an idiot would think that this endeavor is making you rich.....or even breaking minimum wage. Take care of yourself and family first, your patrons will still be here when you reengage. As for what area you dive into next, whatever is fine by me....you haven't done an uninteresting episode yet. As a collector of the many if not most of the arms covered, I always learn something new on even the most common of firearm.

Richard Anderson

I second the person who suggested going to a once per month cadence. The newer episodes are longer, better researched, and far more information dense than the old ones. Set a realistic pace so that you don't burn out. I would like to think you won't lose many patrons if you start slowing down a bit because this information is really valuable. Your paying audience now is probably comprised more of collectors and historians than curious Battlefield 1 players. I will continue to contribute money each month because it's extremely valuable to me as a collector. Each episode is condensed information from several hundred dollars worth of books regarding guns that are mostly in the four or five figure range. I'm guessing for a lot of my fellow Patreons a few bucks a month is peanuts compared to what we spend on Rock Island Auction, Collector Grade Pub books, etc etc :) My recommendation is to continue to emphasize quality over quantity.

Brian Burchanowski

I think you've earned a vacation. See you at Q&A!

Peter A

You do what you need to do. The amount of entertainment and education you folks give me would be a great return on the investment of my little donation even if you *permanently* halved your pace.

Michael Stueber

I think I like most others here are totally cool with a breather skip as frequently as you need them. Regular TV shows take breaks too! Better than burning out. I’d say skip one a quarter and either a Q&A or a Behind the Scenes is more than enough to fill the gap.

I agree with all the other comments. I really appreciate everything you do, and think you should go at the pace that maintains your sanity and lets you have a life. I'm with you irrespective of how quickly episodes come out. Also, Q&A sessions are really valuable and fun. Maybe schedule them regularly?

"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

Take a break, no one is going to blame you. You have earned it.

Everyone needs a break, good on you for finally taking one.

Greg Stachowski

Please take a break, I have watched every episode at least twice... I won't mind watching an archived video, probably the Lewis gun episode, its my fave....

As someone who works 45-50 hours a week and goes to college full time. Take a break. So a week or two off won't be a bad thing at all. Keeps most of the voices at bay if nothing else lol.

Shane Hawkins

Rest, now! and if anyone gives you crap for it.... Othais, beat them with your beard!

Mr. O,

It's about bloody time!

Well deserved break take it enjoy it make love to it.

You should really take it easy. There's no reason why we need a full episode every other week. Once a month is fine with one light episode per week. You could do Q&As or maybe revisit some of the guns from the earlier episodes that didn't get quite the attention they deserved.

I can't speak for everyone else, but if you announced you wanted to take a break and delayed a video I'd completely understand. Hell, I'd consider mailing you a bottle of something that would help you unwind.

Othias, beard bro, get some rest, and make sure to enjoy it! You've done a great job, and I don't think anyone can fault you for finally taking a short break from what's been a very professional, consistent series.

Austin Leeds

Take a break, man.
