Wagon update

I have swapped the transmission filter for a new one, which left me smelling of ATF. This has improved the previously noticeable lope between gears. I managed to swap the steering gear, although somehow lost about 3 degrees on the wheel. Which will irk me enough to pull the pitman again and resettle it. The problem was MOSTLY solved. No more screaming steering. But braking at low speed basically disables power steering still. From my google fu I am told this is from a valve failing in the pump. Locating the valve alone is a pain and rebuilt pumps are inexpensive, so I guess it will all come out later this week. For now, I am, as usual, behind on episode work.

It was more annoying working on the shaft than up under the front end. With it freshly torqued down it was easier to just use the puller to get it back off and adjust.

Have you considered fixing the 3 degrees by pulling the shaft connector in the steering column? Most modern steering columns are two piece and collapsible for safety and include a splined U joint between the two pieces. That U-join is fits onto both shafts with splines and I found it much easier to jump one spline there than remove and tweak a steering rack.
