I think you can be friends and still grow apart when life takes you in two different directions. It’s difficult to find enough time for everyone as new priorities enter the picture. I worked at my old office for 13 years. There was probably a core group of 10-15 of us that used to hang out, get beers etc. I only speak to one of them now (7 years later so I’ve known him for 20 years ish), but I’d absolutely class him as my best friend. I speak to him most days. I’d still class those people I worked with but don’t catch up with as friends - they were friends, we’re just not anymore as our lives have moved us apart.
