[Mixtape, Vol. 4] Random Number Generator II: This Time It's Personal

I think the best possible way to "brute force" things into new musical territory is by way of these random drawing episodes—and there are even more opportunities when we do it full-album style with fifteen songs! 😎🫱...🎲💥

Some of the artists drawn were names I've seen requested for well over a year now, and that's exactly why I look forward to this format. Much like Mixtape, Vol. 3, this episode features a few big bands, many underground bands, and a few bands I'm unsure really exist at all...😅

Let's get weird, because this time it's personal...or something?

[Mixtape, Vol. 4] Random Number Generator II: This Time It's Personal

Comments

You seriously need to push A Man is Not a Camel through for a full album review. You haven't even touched the best songs bass wise off that album yet, and when you do, I can't wait to see your reaction

Chris M

Hey I forgot to request in time but do BILLY TALENT

Dan P

I love Brendan Kelly’s voice but I could see it’s not for everyone, def snotty. The Last and His Hero is Gone were two bands I hadn’t heard and really liked.

Hobo Bastard

If Iʻm not mistake, the Assorted Jellybeans drummer joined the Aquabats, when Travis Barker joined Blink. I saw them just once touring with the Vandals, but they were great live!

Aukai Ligairi

Vote for no repeat artists in the mixtape next time

Aukai Ligairi

If you like Frenzal Rhomb you should check out another great band from Australia called The Decline. Cheers, mate.

Mike C.

Tom Wait is everything…. Just about

Matthew Pucci

STOKED TO SEE SICK OF IT ALL MAKE THE MIX TAPE! GLAD YOU DUG IT!

JONNY

I’m glad you liked Unwritten Law. Surprised you never heard of them because I’ve heard several of their songs on the radio over the years. I’ve probably heard that album 100 times all the way through. No skippable songs because they all sound similar, which is ideal because when you’re in a certain mood you want the vibe to last 30 minutes. Which is why CDs are better than Spotify.

Curtis Robinson

Yes, to me you have a reasonably strong southern USA accent, but I am not from the US, so WTF do I know.

Gav Chap

So funny you trying to do an Aussie accent. Jay (Frenzal vocals) does sound very Aussie even to me as an Australian. That whole album is great!

Nina Daggett

So funny you trying to do an Aussie accent. Jay (Frenzal vocals) does sound very Aussie even to me as an Australian. That whole album is great!

Nina Daggett

Awsome mixtape 😊 Unwritten Law is a great band! Cool to see them here. The number generator was just two numbers away from the first german song 😢 maybe Rafiki will be chosen on the next mixtape 😁

Daniel Baunach

Finally finished this. Favorite new discovery was Screw 32, and I liked the song by The Last too. Mark, you were commenting on the sound on Omnigone--the ska / reggae mixed with the spacey reverb / other effects, and it's actually a style called dub. If you're curious, there's a *whole lot* more music out there in that style. I'm not an aficionado though lol and couldn't point you where to start--actually I will often listen to music with dub elements more than full-on dub artists.

Ray Dweck

I'm pretty sure Jason Black played bass in jazz band growing up. Could have a lot to do with how he constructs his lines.

Bobson Dugnutt

Gotta get a FR song from one of their last 3 albums on there. Stellar production, amazing bass lines, catchy melodies and harmonies.

Jean-Sébastien Cyr

Was ready to watch the full mixtape. Currently listening to the whole Oh Calcutta album after only song 1... Couldn’t resist, that's how good the Lawrence Arms are. This record is beautiful

Punk Astronaut

I love these mix tape shows

Cory Burgess

The Last is a band from the 70’s in LA. Inspiration and the beginnings of The Descendents. You’ll see them when you watch Filmage!

CJ LoBaido

That was the reason I kept requesting them. I think I would’ve preferred he used the version of the Danger album (that has Bill and Karl playing on it - Karl’s bass is a lot punchier on that one), but the original is great too

Dustin Roberts

To be fair, this Tom Waits song isn't fully representative of the 50 years he was a recording artist. Go pull up his album The Heart of Saturday Night on your favorite streaming service and give it a try, it's totally different from "Hell Broke Luce"

Jorge Farah

Enjoyed your reaction to Tom Waits, lol. "Hell Broke Luce" is one of his weirder, more experimental tracks. But the man is an absolute talent and has written many amazing songs over his long career. Definitely worth checking more of his stuff out. There's a reason he's been covered by everyone from the Ramones to Bruce Springsteen, Rod Stewart, and even Scarlett Johansson (yes, the actress; she released an album full of Tom Waits covers)

Jorge Farah

Pull up Rain Dogs and listen to it. It's full of amazing songs. "Hell Broke Luce" is one of his most difficult tracks but the man is a master songwriter.

Jorge Farah

Your accent is very midwestern

Aacc

These mix tapes are so awesome. Keep em coming Mark! Also, so stoked that Quincentuple is getting a solo review!

lostmotel

It was a really awesome watch. Couple of really fun tracks, couple duds, and I learned a few things I didn’t know before the watch. That Deftones track was really cool. I know I’ve heard some of them before but not that song. Really enjoyable. Found out that Tom Waits’ music is the equivalent of a mini endurance test of my patience, which I ultimately failed. Mark; The Lawrence Arms have two vocalist. Chris (guitar) sings clean, Brendan (bass) sings more harsh, but sometimes does clean as well. Chris sang the song on the Christmas mixtape. “Cut It Up”is Brendan on lead vocals, but you can still hear Chris doing backups. They’re two vocalists that are super easy to tell apart, unlike say, Chuck and Chris of HWM. I still struggle sometimes knowing who is singing what part, and I’ve been listening for almost 20 years, lol, just as long as TLA.

PRDinPDX

I appreciate the out-of-left-field choice with Tom Waits. Maybe the requester can get more into this (as I'm still meaning to go through his discography) but I think his earliest albums have more traditional music on them, including with blues and jazz elements (or maybe some more so than others). Closing Time and The Heart of Saturday Night are two examples, which I've heard some of. I also do have Rain Dogs on CD, which is a bit quirkier, but not as strange or difficult to penetrate maybe production-wise as the song here. There are some interesting textures and arrangements on there. His voice is very gravelly though, which may be an obstacle for some. (I've heard his voice is less so on earlier albums though.) Makes me think too--would be great to see some outside-the-box stuff on the channel once in a while. I LOVE that this is a punk space--in which there is still a lot of exploring to do as well--but seeing some experimental, progressive, and just other music once in a while--just a song or two--would be awesome.* Enjoy hearing your thoughts Mark on all these things. Maybe someday we could get something wacky like Mr. Bungle--Trevor Dunn has some great bass parts on "My Ass Is on Fire" and "Dead Goon" (I didn't create the song titles don't shoot the messenger). Or even, for another Mike Patton project, Faith No More's Angel Dust album, where IMO the strongest individual element on it aside from the vocals (Patton being the star) is the basswork. That's Billy Gould *Of course you can get experimental and progressive in punk as well. More Nomeansno would be fun

Ray Dweck

Made me want to immediately watch the fat wreck peep show VHS again

Chris

Screw 32 was such a highlight…awesome throwback to an awesome song. Reacted just the way I expected you too as well haha 🤘

Chris

That was me. You're very welcome, my dude. Month to month I'm going to keep pushing more crust and other heavy nastiness. Tragedy and From Ashes Rise are likely next.

Jason Humphreys

awesome to see Unwritten Law get some attention. same goes for The Last. i think this was my favorite mixtape selection so far.

Kirbie B

Agreed 100%. Central Missouri is what I hear as well. Midwest with a very very subtle southern twist

Nick Meurer

Mark - I've got a say, you have very little, if any, noticeable accent. I'm born and raised in the Midwest and if you and I were speaking, I couldn't tell you were from Louisiana at all compared to most every other person I've ever spoken with from Louisiana. You honestly sound Midwestern. 😂

Nick Meurer

Damn. It's been a while since I've listened to HHIG. I fucking love crust punk. Thanks to whoever put that out there. Man, maybe this is the way to get Mark exposed to the harsher forms of punk. I'm gonna have to start recommending Filth. Maybe it'll get picked for a mix tape! Anyone who doesn't know Filth (old friends of Op Ivy, Green Day, and others from the East Bay scene), go check out the song Dear Fuck. 🤘

Bryan Be Real

This was great! I've been hoping some Screw 32 would get picked eventually and it finally happened! That Frenzal Rhomb song is a real fun one. Speaking of fun, Assorted Jellybeans have always been a fun band and I'm glad to see you enjoyed them too! Also glad Sick of it All finally made it as well, I might have picked a different song to start, but their catalogue is so big anyway that it makes it hard to choose.

Chris J

I haven't heard any music from Tom Waits! And after today... I still haven't heard any music from Tom Waits.

Daniel Smith

Why?

Bee Kay

On the accent - yours is very mild in my very uneducated opinion. Your reaction to ‘midday’ was hilarious - frenzal are known for pretty much popularising using an Australian accent in Australian punk, cos a lot of bands would use American accents because that’s where their influence was typically from. This song is a set staple and Lindsay mcdougall is a highly underrated guitarist, the guy is phenomenal (his brothers band, who are twins, Ebolagoldfish, are awesome too)

Bee Kay

This was a great mix tape! Super stoked for more Lawrence Arms and I really hope we get more Frenzal Rhomb 🍻

McChud

Definitely need Quicksand. And Gorilla Biscuits!

Jason Humphreys

I was thinking the same thing about not being the track I'd pick BUT I totally get it, it's an entirely bass driven song with his heavy af awesome tone. My fav album of their's.

Jason Humphreys

Just finishing the video and when you said you'd like to do it on a live stream, I would recommend starting a Twitch for it. You don't need to do anything with it, just create it and let everyone know it's there so we can follow and subscribe. I've seen people do video requests live there before and as far as I can tell, you can't get into any copyright trouble. Just a thought. Loved the vid!

Ceej Luige

No problem sir. My next likely picks will be Tragedy and From Ashes Rise. I played a show with Tragedy in a living room in 2000. They were playing full stacks. The stench meter was off the charts.

Jason Humphreys

You have a very slight twinge of a Southern accent. It's right around the vowels sometimes I can hear that North Louisiana. And I can only really tell because I've trained my ear to listen for them due to spending so much time working for companies in the UK.

Gamer's Tavern

I met the lead guy when they played by me at this tiny place in the burbs. I heard he went on to own a strip club.

Jeff Harstead

His Hero Is Gone 🔥 When I bought that album (Monuments to Thieves) on vinyl when I was a kid it was so heavy I couldn't figure out if it was supposed to be played on 33 or 45

Jason Humphreys

whoever got HHIG on here, hat tip to you.

Mike Paras

FYI about the skolars for you. They were originally called The Skolars but had to change their name when another band called the Skalars threatened to sue them so they changed it to Telegraph. The Skolars album is called 10 songs and then some and is fantastic ska with a lot of swing elements, then as telegraph they released an EP and one more pop oriented full length. I drove to Detroit to see their last show, Dereck Grant from suicide machines was playing drums for them which was sweet. I believe he was their drummer on the Telegraph stuff. They were also from Detroit and used to play with the suicide machines a lot.

J Reid

Assorted jellybeans have two singers who sing with each other a lot. And Skolars/telegraph are awesome, like a more digestible Streetlight imo.

J Reid

I can relate to your frustration and not just because I also love Masked Intruder. It sucks being left out again. I guess the saving grace is that not being lost in the shuffle as part of a playlist gives our songs a shot at getting more 'special treatment' down the line with individual reaction videos just about them. I hope there will be more inclusive mixtape formats in the future, like the Me First and the Gimme Gimmes and Christmas ones. I felt like I was part of those after requesting a song that got on the Christmas mix and voting for multiple entries on the Gimmes list. I've been shut out of the random draw tapes, mostly because there are just too damn many songs to choose from for a final tally of only fifteen to sixteen. This is the same thing that happened last time - only one song on the whole thing that I love and voted for...last time Banner Pilot, this time Frenzal Rhomb.

Quote Unquote Sir

Probably the first mix tape I'm gonna skip. Glad I checked the spoiler sheet.

Johnny Carcinogen

I’d like him to do the first album personally, but glad he finally got to hear them

Kris Bonner

Amazing to see band #7 make the list. Not the best song example imo though. You should do more of that album 😏

Ben

Tom Waits has a few very different styles. The one you heard on this video is very different from something like Heart Attack and Vine, which is a popular song I bet you'd recognize and probably what most people imagine him to sound like. The outro of Herojuana is probably my all time favorite dual guitar part. The chromaticism, the way the melody ever so slightly changes. Fuck, I love it so much. His Hero Is Gone is crust punk. You've unlocked a new genre, congrats!

Steven White

Screw 32 was considered the house band at Gilman in the 90's. Gilman is where Op Ivy, Green Day, Rancid, AFI, Tilt and many others came from. The bass player in Screw 32 went to to join Tilt after Screw 32 broke up. Screw 32's live performances were pretty incredible with high energy. They were a band that every band i liked would thank in their albums so that's how I found them.

Joe

If I remember right wasn’t Telegraph aka the Skolars singer brothers with suicide machines singer Jay Navarro? Can’t remember the connection

Kris Bonner

As for your accent... I was shocked to hear you were from Louisiana. I've traveled the entire country several times and Louisiana accents are usually very distinct. I would have guessed you from St. Louis or Kansas City maybe. Some mid-sized city in the mid-south.

Ceej Luige

Masked Intruder - Hello Beautiful is never gonna get picked But at least we have like 9 more NOFX songs

Justin Olson

First half of that Tom Waits song I was strongly considering fast forwarding because I wasn't getting it AT ALL. By halfway through the song it started seeming to make sense. By the time it was over I was like "fuck yea!" I'm not sure I have had quite that progression of emotions during one song before

Ceej Luige

I think "Herojuana" is pronounced like, heroin+marijuana= Herojuana, cause the song is about drugs. Pump Up The Valium is my favorite Nofx album, wasn't at first but it grew on me. And the bass tone is superb. Check it out.

Mike C.

Ah man that skolars song is mislabeled on bandcamp! They are a full ska band. The bass work on the ska songs is primo. Thats the one punk song 😅

ross franklin

Glad to see you somewhat enjoy Sick of it All. I would've chosen another song. That record (Scratch the Surface) is a banger. Same with Built to Last. They're uber mosh material!

Joe

Derek Grant of Alk3 played drums with Telegraph at some point, I think after this record. I had that blue cover CD and a 7”.

Jon Person

You keep saying quicksand... give them a shot! I saw Quicksand open for Deftones in 1999. Quicksand is a highly influential band from the 90's. Walter Schreifels (singer/guitar) is a legend. Youth of Today, Gorilla Biscuits, Quicksand, Rival Schools, Dead Heavens... Yeah I'm a huge fan!

Joe

I lived in North Carolina for a few years, definitely don't hear a southern accent with you. You just sound like a Colorado guy. Lol.

Mike C.

—SPOILERS BELOW— The comparison between Step Down and Bro Hymn is fairly apt - it used to be Sick of it All’s big set finisher, more recently they mix it into their set but it’s a fan favourite and a set staple for sure. They’re one of those bands that’s been around so long that their production values have changed significantly from early in their career to later, and they re-recorded a lot of their earlier songs with modern day production and they sound really brutal - polarising, but I thought it was great. The singer, Lou Koller, recently went through cancer treatment and it sounds like he’s come through it cancer free too, fingers crossed - can’t wait til they start touring again

Bee Kay

Yeah you got my Sunday Suit request!

Tom Wheeler

Song #6 artist... I own 15 of the 17 studio albums he/she/they have released and I've been a fan for 30+ years. Trust me when I tell you that you could pick any 10 of their songs at random, and then the 11th one would be something completely different. There's a metric ton to unpack with this artist. Mere mortals do not work with Crystal Gayle, get covered by the Ramones and Sarah McLachlan, and then have Scarlett Johansson do a whole album of your covers. He/she/they is/are an absolute titan of the last 50 years.

Alice Devilman

Nice to see The Last on here. David Nolte from The Last was the original bassist for The Descendents when they started. ALL (pun intended) of Bill Stevensons surf beats were inherited from him loving The Last. The Last were a huge influence on Billy.

Eric Christensen

Awesome my song request by omnigone was picked! Ska now more than ever!

Kris Bonner

TWO HWM songs?! Swoon. YES you DO need to do a whole album, which one is very hard to choose! I tend to the early stuff just due to raw power and guttural quality.

Loren Cox

Don't read this comment if you don't want spoilers....

Loren Cox

Looking forward to it!! It’ll be another 8 hours before I get to watch. Fucking brutal!

PRDinPDX

At some point you'll want to check out The Falcon which features Brendan Kelly (vocals/guitar) from the Lawrence Arms and Dan Adriano (Aklaline Trio) on bass

Chris P

Good call on the spoiler timestamp! I love surprises 🥰

Catherine Stowell

Screw 32!

Aaron M

the RNG gods have blessed us on this day.

ryan mcgrath

Nice! My request made it!! Stoked to hear your thoughts on track #10 after I’m done with work for the day.
