[Mixtape, Vol. 2] Marky's Punk Rock Christmas

Mixtape, Vol. 2 is going to be hard to top! ❄️ I had such a blast and really didn’t want it to be over. Despite a completely random requesting and voting system, this turned out to be such a varied mixtape representing every feeling ever felt about the holidays: grim, happy, philosophical, blissful, hilarious...it was just perfectly paced. You guys always pick 'em flawlessly.

I got to hear a few classics from familiar bands alongside some originals from bands I've never heard before. I can’t wait to explore each of them further on the channel next year.

Merry Christmas to all of you, and I hope this episode is a fun little addition to your festivities! 🎄🎁

[Mixtape, Vol. 2] Marky's Punk Rock Christmas

Comments

Vandals - Live Fast, Diarrhea.. Is an absolute MUST do album. Guaranteed you'll be an instant fan.

Jake Ryan

Loved this! So many good tracks and your reactions/reviews are so good. I will say though - as much as I love NUFAN and Tilt, their cover of Fairytale doesn’t even come close to touching the original Pogues version. Shane McGowan was one of the most gifted poets and musicians to ever be a part of the punk scene. RIP Shane and Tony both

CareyDD

I just want to comment super late, but now with Flogging Molly done, Market you need to listen to some of The Pogues!

charlie grasse

Caught this one a bit late, but still great as ever. Hope you had a great Christmas Mark and Low End chat! Here's to an even better 2025 🍻

Jake

If you like Spike in MFATGG, check him out with Ukulele Hunt, or for short (and say it FAST) Uke Hunt!

Kenzi Graham

Really hope for a full NUFAN album reaction in the future. RIP Tony

Henrik Opheim Hegre

Please do one for Halloween next year! Halloween punk songs are the absolute best!

Tom Alberti

First time here in the Patreon, I love your videos! Where I can vote for a band/song reaction? I reallye need you to listening to FORUS and MUTE *-*

Gustavo Fabian

It's linked in the post above for Spotify!

Mark Michell

Can we find this playlist on spotify ?

Craigarius

Best album for sure

Aacc

Father Christmas is the song that step brothers ended on/credits

Aacc

"Thank you very much, it's great to be here in New Jersey"

Gary Webb

Cool to be You is a great album. My favorite by far.

CJ LoBaido

I agree. I was hoping for some Relient K.

CJ LoBaido

When you do get to Fear, listen to New York's Alright (it has horns!) And, when you do some research just google Fear + SNL (or Saturday night live or john belushi).

Chris J

Seconding New York's Alright (if you like saxophones)

Chris J

Mark would've got wild for the horns!

Chris J

She also sang for Retching Red post-Tilt.

Chris J

Months ago I think I requested Cafe 405 or And Now We Dance.. there's so many good songs to choose from

Gary Webb

I’m glad you heard the vandals. There’s a lot more to hear. Pretty funny songs.

Stony

The female singing on Fairytale of New York is Cinder Block who is the singer of punk band Tilt. She's got a great voice.

Joe

The best thing about the Lawrence Arms is that both vocalists, Brendan and Chris, sound and write so different from each other, but compliment each other so well! "Oh! Calcutta!" is my favorite album of theirs. I can't wait for some more Larry Arms reactions!

Les McLarty

The Raw and Searing Flesh is another great Lawrence Arms bass track. There's a lot going on in that one. Really think you'll dig it

Bobson Dugnutt

Very fun Mark you are churning out premo content. Such a great christmas blessing to us neglected punkers. 🎶🎸🪨🧨 🎅 Dudddeee Yessssss! This is why we all talk about Mikes writing! It’s so clever on many levels and the humour I think is the most endearing trait. WAIT until you get into Willie Screams lyrics. The Pogues version of fairytale of new york is far better imo and the pogues are definitely punk pioneers. I am not nor have ever been a fan of NUFAN personally though so to each their own yooo.

Papa Shango

The second singer on NUFAN's cover of Fairytale of New York is Cinder Block of Tilt, another great band for you to check out sometime. Anything from the Til it Kills album is excellent. Fairtyale of New York was originally by the Pogues.

Tim Cornish

Seconds into the No use song "He's got a great voice" - RIP Tony

oscar johnson

Except it was another actor’s voice overdubbed because the director didn’t like Lee’s voice. Kind of ironic for an iconic singer.

Aukai Ligairi

Thanks for this, Mark. I'm glad the song I voted for got included and you enjoyed it. I appreciate you identifying the voters like myself by name. For me, this was the best case scenario of what can happen with your mixtape format. I was able to enjoy reactions to songs I've already liked for a long time, while also getting introduced to enjoyable songs that are new to me.

Quote Unquote Sir

Lee Ving, (singer of FEAR) played Mr. Boddy in the 80s movie, Clue, with Tim Curry

Gary Webb

the greatest musical guest to ever grace that stage

Gary Webb

Also I'm entertained that there were two blink-182 songs on here lol. Glad to hear you got to "Mutt" too on YouTube. Enema of the State (which "Mutt" comes from) or Take Off Your Pants and Jacket (where "Happy Holidays, You Bastard" comes from) are fantastic as far as bass tone--and I also think it's a great point about how resourceful the band is with a narrower range of chords but constantly rearranging them, trading off single-note melodies and power chords between the bass and the guitar, etc. Great songwriting, in addition to the catchy vocal melodies (and of course Travis on the drums). I know you've had their untitled album as a contender for a full-album review for a little while, but I think it could be worth hitting either Enema of the State or TOYPAJ before it--both of which predate it--to better appreciate the stylistic variety they're going for on the latter album as well.

Ray Dweck

Thanks for the shout-out Mark (I picked Descendents' "Christmas Vacation," along with one other person I think)! If you'd like to return to the Descendents with Karl Alvarez I'd definitely recommend their album Cool to Be You. Yeah, "Christmas Vacation" is off an earlier album that predates Alvarez. Probably the highlight for me is the chorus and the vocal harmonies in that. Side note: Fat Mike produced Cool to Be You and considers it one of the Descendents' best albums--which may sound like self-promotion lol but I think I agree with him. Song-for-song, I prefer it to Everything Sucks (which also has some good ones on it, don't get me wrong).

Ray Dweck

Great video. The Lawrence Arms is my favorite band. I just flew to chicago to see them. ❤️

ross franklin

Yeah DM’s song is a fantastically unique Xmas song!

Eric Goodwin Art

This was such a blast to watch!! I was super happy to see my request close out the mixtape too- it’s the oldest song on the playlist by far, and The Kinks helped inspire punk rock with songs like this, back in the 60s and 70s. This was a great way to discover some punk Christmas songs I hadn’t heard before too! You’re one of my favorite reactors and music teachers on the interwebs, with great insight, music appreciation, and enthusiasm 🎶

Eric Goodwin Art

I thought I was the one who requested the first Bad Religion one! 🥺

Juan Manuel Morales

Yes, that’s the Lawrence arms. Can’t wait for you to do a full album. Haha

ryan mcgrath

Mark is the man after this 100%

Alan Jeglin

Check out when fear was on snl, wild

kreviss jurjesss

I remember back some time in the 90s when MTV Cribs did an episode with Gwen Stefani and Warren from the Vandals was just hanging out by her pool butt ass naked, as usual

Chris P

This was amazing. Just bummed no Relient K made the cut. Their Christmas album is a really well made blend of pop punk, ballads and a few fast paced songs. It’s the only rock album I can put on during a holiday gathering without having a family member complaining after the first song.

Jean-Sébastien Cyr

we should've got voodoo glow skulls feliz navidad on there

Robin Langford

Which songs would you recommend?

Aukai Ligairi

Gotta watch Fear on SNL!!

CJ LoBaido

Love this episode! Now I can sleep well :-) The NUFAN-song is my favorite of this awsome playlist. Oi to the World by Broilers is also cool ;-)

Daniel Baunach

"Where is Rudolph? Where is Blitzen, baby?" Ramones, NUFAN, and Dropkick Murphy's were my top 3 during voting. I'm still surprised Dropkick didn't make the cut though!

Bill Jago

The guitar melody in "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" sounds like a Lillington's song

Todd Strapac

Damn, I'm surprised that The Season's Upon Us by The Dropkick Murphys didn't get on there.

Justin Paden

He mentioned on the Gimmees episode that he wasn’t really a fan of the Ramones style

Aukai Ligairi

Thanks Mark, for all the great content you've given us this year! I hope you and yours have a great holiday season and can't wait to see what's on the playlist for 2025.

Ceej Luige

mark, you're gonna have to go back and on your own time listen to the original Fairytale of New York by the Pogues

Gary Webb

Bummed more vandals didnt win for this, they are the christmas GOATs. If he thought some of the stuff was ironically downer, man would he have been shocked to hear "Hang myself from the tree". Oddly enough, this album (Oi to the world) was studio recorded by a miss mash of talent because Freese was touring with I believe Perfect circle. I know Brooks did a a track or 2, as well as Smelly. Now, who did what tracks, I have no clue. Warren does a ton of studio work too, He did electric work for Tenacious D, and we know Joe E is a legend and only original member left, but he's a lawyer that did a ton of work helping a lot of these bands. Anyway, all that to say, The Vandals have never gotten the respect as the legends they are inside the punk community.

Hans

Grateful for YOU Mark! Thanks for a year of amazing content. Can’t wait for 2025!

lostmotel

I threw it out there as my suggestion 😁 Didn’t get much traction I guess 😆

lostmotel

Dang, I think we all forgot to include the vandals cover of dance of the sugar plum fairies

Jessie

MU330 also has a full album of Christmas songs on Asian Man Records but I’d recommend their “Angles We Have Heard on High” if I was going to pull one track for my Christmas mix.

Aukai Ligairi

Bro, if you have never heard "The Pogues- fairytale of Newyork " Please please listen to it!🙏 the greatest chrismas song ever

Ben Storer

Absolutely love this! But a bit disheartened to hear you’re not familiar with the Ramones too much. I just figured you knew their work! But they certainly deserve more representation on the channel. Granted, the bass work isn’t a technical masterpiece, but it’s down-strumming at its best, and super catchy. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE more Ramones 🙏

Socket Meyer

The Vandals are legends - awesome band! The legendary Josh Freese (who has worked with everyone) is still the current drummer. They also did an album (Look What I Almost Stepped In) with Brooks Wackerman (former Bad Religion, current Avenged Sevenfold drummer)...you're pretty much always guaranteed great drumming on their albums!

Tim Kaiser

Hell yeah, have a Christmas beer with Fear. If you want some good FEAR songs, try, I Believe I'll Have Another Beer, New Yorks Alright if You Like Saxaphones or Lets Have a War

Gary Webb

100% no doubt covered vandals. Vandals are punk legends and no doubt did it as a tribute.

Hans

Love that The Lawrence Arms make an appearance!

ross franklin

Loved this mixtape! I would have chosen other songs of the Bad Religion Christmas album with much more heavenly vocal harmonies (I'm a sucker for their harmonies)... but still great! Thanks, and a nice Christmas time for all!

Achim Esser

Great selections. I only regret I wasn’t able to see your post in time to recommend Mighty Mighty Bosstones original “X-Mas Time (Sure Doesn’t Feel Like It)” or Tim Timebomb’s (Tim from Rancid and OpIvy) “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch.” I also really like Unwritten Law’s take on “Please Come Home For Christmas,” and Joel Pack’s (from Broke City) cover of “All I want for Christmas is You”

Aukai Ligairi

Ah, you missed out on relient K! Well, this is a good mix too.
