Should we start a Discord server?

Folks, I've seen frequent comments and requests for a Low End University Discord server, so I'll run a little poll here to gauge interest...

I originally planned to utilize Discord for this Patreon from day one, but to be honest, I don't know much about it and have only used it a few times in the past. The setup was a little confusing, so I put it off for another time.

When Patreon rolled out their in-house chat feature, it felt like it achieved the same purpose. However, I'd love to hear your feedback if you feel it'd be worthwhile to still have!

If you don’t like the organization of the different threads of discord it probably means you’ve e never belonged to a good discord community. Imagine instead of having one General thread you and have a different thread for every topic, every genre of music, even voice channels for community collaboration, etc etc etc.

As someone that has set up and ran a 200+ person Discord server before, I would say to give it some thought before introducing one. It's hard to take something away like that once you've introduced it. It can be time consuming moderating one. You'll either need to do a lot of the work yourself or elect moderators to do it for you, but then you will need to manage them. Either way, it's going to add time to your day but is unlikely to create any extra value versus the existing Patreon chat. It's a 24/7 hassle and very thankless, and there will be some days where it will test your patience. I'd get stressed sometimes going to bed thinking I wouldn't be available to sort out people's disagreements for a few hours. If you do decide to go down the route my advice would be: 1) Don't make too many channels too quickly - less is more, it's better to have 3 busy channels than 20 empty ones. 2) Set the ground rules early and stick to them, and apply them as fairly as possible. If you want no politics or no religion as a rule, you need to enforce that when people get onto those topics. Good luck with whatever you decide.
