Prior to this Patreon, I don’t think I’ve sat down and listened to 10 albums in one year, with undivided attention, since I was a teenager. This was my one and only goal with this series, and I feel I’m already better for it. Your votes have truly guided me into some incredible music.
The Shape of Punk to Come by Refused is now my favorite episode I’ve put together - not necessarily my favorite album I’ve heard on Patreon - but my favorite episode so far. It challenged me as a listener, and I couldn’t make any assumptions until the very last note. After the album concluded, I was left with the exact same amount of intrigue I had before it started.
I wish I could’ve heard this album right when it came out to feel its cultural impact in real-time, but I’ll take what I can get. It’s a whole different play on the word “progressive” than what I’m used to, and kept me in a tailspin from start to finish. These are the types of albums I love analyzing, because they really make you work for it. You had to really meet this one halfway, and I hope I did it justice!

2025-08-21 03:14:13 +0000 UTCHad to join the Patreon just to watch someone experience this album for the first time..... idk, maybe to bring myself back to my first listen in '98. I'll never forget the shock of it and those first few months of really digging in and listening to it. It was so different than their previous album, but even more importantly, so different from everything in the musical landscape at the time. Just an iconic album and iconic band. They are on their farwell tour right now, I was lucky enough to catch them for the first, and last, time. You should give their first reunion album (Freedom, realeased in 2015) a listen sometime. I dont think anyone would put it on the same pedestal as Shape of Punk to Come, but in my opinion, it was a perfect follow up. Totally aritistic and creative. I think listening to that one and then their last album (War Music, 2019) might really help you kind of solidfy the picture in your head of what they 'are' as a band.
