Taking a break...
Added 2022-12-02 12:01:00 +0000 UTCEpisodes on hold
Hey it's Jack. I'm taking a break in Quarter 1. Like all of Q1. As a supporter, I want you to know first. I don't have any episodes planned for January, February, or March of 2023. I’ll pick back up in April with monthly episodes.
Make no mistake – the show is doing well, thanks to your support! We've had a stellar run so far, and there's so much more I want to make.
But why, Jack, WHY!?
I need to take some personal time. Ideally, I hope that having a bit of extra time will give me time to train more people and get the show rolling full steam again. Maybe even better than before. But I can't promise that now. I am human and need a break.
Patreon access
Your monthly payments will continue unless you cancel. Some people may want to remain subscribers to access the ad-free and bonus episodes during that time.
By all means, feel free to cancel your subscription. I won't be mad at all, and it won’t endanger the show in the future. I’m not bringing you any content during that time. You need a break too.
I’m excited to cover more stories that inspire, delight, and surprise in 2023! See you on the dark side.

Seriously the best podcast ever.

2024-09-11 03:17:06 +0000 UTCUPDATE: he sent me a message back, he’s swamped, he sees it as he’s put 148 episodes out for free and if any provided value we can all tip him further. There won’t be Patreon updates for a long time from what I can gather. Love ya Jack keep doin what you’re doing!

2024-03-09 14:06:52 +0000 UTCThat's one opinion.. another might be, the simple fact that law enforcement is their chosen profession, so regardless of how well versed they are in certain areas of "digital" crime.. OR how they chose to act IRL when performing their law enforcement duties (including how they respond to and treat the individuals they encounter while in the performance of said duties) doesn't change the fact that they are indeed getting paid to investigate crimes, apprehend alleged criminals.. secure them and the scene in general.. along with any potential evidence which might become crucial later.. makes them, by definition, "professionals". We might not agree with how they act and carry themselves, or how they treat people who may be innocent.. but that's neither here nor there, the bottom line is, all cops ARE cops.. they deserve at least SOME level of authority since we (society) charge them with maintaining law and order in order to protect us, our families, our property, etc. So you can't have it both ways. You can't expect cops to rush to your defense, kick down doors, and storm in with automatic rifles when our loved ones are being held captive (or worse, tortured, raped, or murdered) by crazed gunmen.. but then ALSO expect them to treat US with the utmost respect, like good, timid, little public "servants" whenever we find ourselves in a precarious situation where we are only "mistaken" for someone who may or may not be breaking into a building in the middle of the night as a pen tester, etc. So if you ask me, it goes with the risk of the job! If you want to be a midnight ninja pen tester, you have to be willing to accept the fact that you might find yourself face down in the mud with a jack oot on your back, staring down the barrel of a rifle! In that scenario, the cops are only doing what we PAY them to do. Just my $.02

2024-01-20 22:23:53 +0000 UTCHey Jack and Patreon community.. Does anyone know, is this the best place to reach out to Jack with a question/suggestion for a future episode? I'm not sure how active Jack is here in the comments on his Patreon. Some creators respond to almost every (reasonable) comment, but others only post to Patreon, but never engage in the comments of those posts. Thanks DND fans. 👍

2024-01-20 22:05:52 +0000 UTCHi Jack. I love the content you create. There are minor annoyances here and there but overall this podcast has completely consumed my podcast listening for the last 3 weeks or so. I have been working through the episodes from the beginning and at S1E59 I had to stop, join your patron, and comment. Every time you or one of your guests characterizes a police officer or member of law enforcement as "professional" or "a good guy" it makes my skin crawl. As S1E59 clearly illustrates, whether an individual law enforcement officer is good or bad is completely irrelevant when law enforcement as an institution is so broken. What your pen testers with their privilege learned is that if one or more individuals in law enforcement decide they want to destroy your life, they can, and it is only those who can afford very good legal representation who have the slightest chance of detangling themselves from this system. What your pen testers learned is how it felt to be black during Jim Crow or how it feels to be poor in an aggressively policed area. It floored me that noone put this together in the episode and how outraged these privileged individuals were even after going through this experience. Welcome to modern US law enforcement - try not to upset or hurt the ego of the thugs with uniforms.

2024-01-15 18:37:40 +0000 UTCJack, I have listened to every single episode and only recently become a patron, I feel this is the least I can do for the countless hours you have kept me entertained. My son who is turning 17, gamer - is going into IT, possibly even security based on the stories I've told him that I have learned on your show. So yeah, I owe you a bunch and have a break. Sometimes taking a step back gives you a perspective in bouncing forward, with or without the show.

2023-03-13 09:31:10 +0000 UTCI haven’t actually cancelled my subscription because I’m intrigued. Everyone one deserves a vacation. And he sounds great. I just didn’t know him yet and believe his vacation should be covered by his long term members who support him, not a brand new subscriber who has never seen his content. I spend money on Patreon for plenty of content (including this still) And yeah I’d love to get to know his work, how was I to know how hard he worked in just meeting this community :) Sharing honest opinions is never in poor taste my friend. Have a day.
Megan
2023-02-28 02:33:05 +0000 UTCI subbed during his time off, knowing that he's off - Because this is the best podcast I've found. I don't normally pay for patron or donate to anything :)... But I'm addicted to this content and want more of it. The research and production involved is a lot of work and he hasn't taken any time off since 2017. I imagine you get vacation and holidays wherever you work and I'm sure in the beginning it was 100% him making all the content... Hopefully, he gets big enough to hire some staff to churn out stuff regularly.

2023-02-27 20:51:44 +0000 UTCJust FYI - Also, prior to this podcast I used to listen to Rogan and Lex Fridman mostly. I'd recommend if you can to go on one of those podcast ... maybe Lex would be better to increase your exposure. Maybe you've done this already, but I think it would be interesting to have a quantum computer researcher on an episode. I'm no expert but from whitepapers I've found on it 49 physical qubits can represent 1 logical qubit with 3% error rate after 25 runs. Physical computer qubits increase at a rate of around 2.5x per year and it takes roughly double the bit length in logical qubits to break RSA... so 2048 (112 bit strength) is ~4096 logical qubits or about a 200K physical qubit computer of which should happen around 2029 and most of the internet runs on RSA 2048... increasing it to 4096 bit length only buys a year's worth of time (~400K qubit computer, which would be released the year after a 200K one) https://arxiv.org/pdf/2207.06431.pdf, https://arxiv.org/pdf/1706.06752.pdf, https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/7535

2023-02-16 18:15:18 +0000 UTCThis comment is in poor taste. Jack has worked 5 years, producing one of, if not The Best podcasts in his genre. Maybe get familiar with his podcast and the 5 years of content before a commentary display such as this. Have a day.

2023-02-05 02:12:55 +0000 UTCI only started listening to DD at the beginning of 202 2and I have to give you a big time THANK YOU by continuing to support you here. I burned through the entire catalog and in the process found a new career goal of becoming a pentester. After working in IT for 12 years and have been burned out on it for much of it, I'm ridiculously excited about the future in pentesting. Never would have pursued this field without this podcast.

I started with the first one......and a week later had burned through the first 25 episodes! I'm up to 53. Shadow Brokers today, so with you taking some much needed time out, that might give me a chance to 'catch up' before your return.

2022-12-02 12:19:26 +0000 UTCHave a good break, Jack. There's plenty in the back catalogue to listen to if I miss it too much :) I think I and most of your subscribers will keep their sub active, great content deserves support; and if a break keeps you fresh then that's a price well worth paying!
