現代の都会で生まれ育った私は、ずっとサトシたちの旅はあくまでフィクションだと思っていました。

あんな小さなリュックで子供が何日も旅するなんて嘘だと。

時は流れ、旅好きになった私はいわゆるバックパッカーを経て大人になっていきます。アニポケも見なくなり、サトシのことも頭の片隅に追いやられていきましたが、私の旅好きの源泉にはポケモンがありサトシがあったような気がします。

大人になってから見識が広がり、「これってフィクションじゃなくて現実にもあるんだ！」と知ることが増えました。サトシのような旅も実際にあること、簡単にそんな世界に足を踏み入れられることにふと気がつきました。

ロングディスタンスハイキング

サトシたちの旅はいわゆる長距離ハイキング（ロングディスタンスハイキング/ロングハイキング）に相当すると思っています。ざっくりいえば長距離を歩いて移動する旅です。

1990年代、長距離ハイキングにおいて当時の常識からかけ離れた、軽量・シンプルを突き詰めた手法・思想がアメリカのPCTという道を歩く人から生まれます。

当時は一部の人間が自作の道具を使用し軽量・シンプルを実現していましたが、次第にメーカーからも道具が販売されるようになり、その手法・思想はさらに広まっていきます。これに端を発した新しいハイキングの軽量化の歴史は素材技術の発展などもあいまって現代まで続いています。

無印アニポケが始まったのは1997年。まさにそんな新しい手法が生まれた直後でした。

（※「軽量・シンプルな手法・思想」と回りくどい言い回しを繰り返しましたが、一般的にはウルトラライト（UL）ハイキングなどと呼ばれます。いい意味で宗教っぽいと個人的に思っており、人によって解釈が分かれる＆自分の理解も不十分なのですが、ざっくり言うと「とにかく軽く＆シンプルにすることでより遠くまで行ける＆自然との距離が縮まる」みたいな思想です。ただの軽量化ではなく、物を減らしてシンプルにしつつ、足りない部分は工夫でなんとかやりくりするのがポイントで、何か月も歩く長距離ハイキングにおいて特に有用な思想だと思っています。アウトドア版ミニマリストみたいなもんだといえば伝わるでしょうか？製品タグを着けたまま運んでも無駄だし1gでも軽くなるなら全部切ろうぜ、とかパンツは前後表裏で4倍履けるぜ（実際は人と会わないしめんどくさいので履き替えない）、とかの積み重ねでサトシくらいの小さいバックパックで数か月自然の中を歩けるようになります。一般的に基本装備の重量が4.5kg以下ならUL、などと言われることもありますが、個人的には現代ではこの基準はあまり重要でないように思っています。いろいろ進化しているので基本重量3kg以下くらいがちゃんとしたULのような感覚です。）

サトシの装備

2024年の今、軽量シンプルな道具は簡単に手に入るようになり、情報も共有され、サトシのような装備で長距離ハイキングをすることへのハードルはかなり低いものとなっています。

なのでサトシの持ち物について現実的に考察しているサイトがないかと思って検索したのですが、この画像くらいしか見つけられませんでした。

蚊取り線香があるってことはアニポケの世界には蚊がいるんでしょうね…。

サトシたちがずっと同じ格好なのは下着以外に替えを持たないからです。

この画像に載っているもの以外にも以下のものたちがリュックに詰め込まれていると思われます。

・寝袋

ポケモンといえば寝袋だけで焚火のそばで寝ているイメージです。

テントやタープを張らずに寝袋だけで寝るの、雨の多い日本だとあまりやるチャンスがありませんが、アメリカ西部の乾燥した地域とかだとわりとしやすいようです。カウボーイキャンプと呼ばれます。

無印アニポケの舞台は全体的にアメリカっぽいですよね。グランパキャニオンもホリウッドも出てくるし。

虫も嫌だし日本だと現実的にはビビィ泊が妥当だと思います。私はよくTerranovaの蚊帳付き防水シュラフカバーで寝ています。

・雨具

登山で必須の道具として雨具は有名ですが、長距離ハイキングでも必須です。

ULハイキングのセオリー的には雨具にも屋根壁にもなるポンチョタープが王道だと認識しているのですが、改めて確認したら前開き袖付きのロングレインコートを着ていました。

別個でタープを持っているのか、この雨具がシェルターになるのか、アニメの演出的な問題のどれかだと思っています。

・その他

雪山をこれで越えていくんだからたぶん防寒着や他の服は持っていないんでしょう…。現実ではちゃんと調べて行きましょう。

カップ麺食べているなら水筒など水を運ぶ道具と湯を沸かす道具と食べるためのカトラリーも持っていそうです。食事系の道具、現代ではめちゃくちゃ軽いのが比較的安く手に入ります。タケシと合流後は共同装備にしていそうです。

あとはライト、地図、コンパス、着火装置、浄水器など細々したものなどでしょうか。サトシは若いしマットなしで寝ていそうですが、現実的には我々にはマットが必要になることが多いです。

アニメの中ではポケモンやポケモンセンターの存在が大きそうです。きっといろんな補助金が出ててトレーナーなら格安でポケモンセンターに泊まれるんでしょうね。比較的温暖な気候とか、食料や水の補給が定期的にできる環境とかがあってのサトシの装備ではありますが、実際そう大きく変わらないコンパクトさで我々も旅ができます。

ロングトレイル

仮に軽量コンパクトな装備がそろったとて、「実際どこに行けばサトシみたいな旅ができるのんだ？アメリカに行かないとできないのではないのか？」と思われる方もいらっしゃると思います。

昨今登山や長距離ハイキングの流行にともなって日本でも道・コースの整備が進んでいます。長い距離を歩くための道、ロングトレイルは日本各地に存在します。

四国遍路などは聞いたことのある方も少なくないと思いますが、各地にあるのでお近くのロングトレイルをチェックしてみてはいかがでしょうか？

一気に長距離歩かなくても、日帰りでも楽しめますのでお気軽に。

というわけでサトシの旅は現代なら意外と現実的なのでやってみては？というブログでした。とはいってもそんな長期間休めないのもまた現代の悲しき現実かもしれません。。ここまで読んでいただきありがとうございました！

（先日、四国遍路を1週間野宿しながらを歩いた記録をこの下に書こうとしていたのですが、長くなってしまったのでまたいつか。

※基本的に日本で野宿は違法です。野宿が許可されている場所の情報を集めたり、できる限り許可貰いながら、特にロングトレイルでは地域に感謝し配慮しながら野宿しましょう。四国遍路は外国人だらけでしたが、野宿について話した外国人は皆、野宿しようとしたら警察が来たと言っていました（皆といっても2/2人だけど）。コミュニケーションとって情報収集しましょう。定期更新される攻略本みたいなのにきっとたどり着きます。自然は少なく文化寄りですが、初めての日本がお遍路といっていた外国人も少なくなかったので外国人にもおすすめかもしれません。）

Long-distance Hiking

I believe Ash's journey is akin to what's known as long-distance hiking. In simple terms, it's a journey where you travel long distances on foot.

In the 1990s, an approach and philosophy that focused on lightweight and simplicity emerged among those walking the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) in the U.S., diverging from the norms of long-distance hiking at the time.

Back then, only a select few people achieved lightweight and simplicity using homemade gear. Gradually, manufacturers began producing equipment, further spreading this approach and philosophy. This new wave of lightweight hiking continues to evolve to this day, fueled by advancements in material technology.

The original Pokémon anime began in 1997, right after this new approach was born.

(Note: The term "lightweight and simple approach and philosophy" is often referred to as ultralight (UL) hiking. I find it somewhat like a religion in a good way, and interpretations vary among people. My understanding is also incomplete, but it can be roughly summarized as "by making everything as light and simple as possible, you can travel farther and be closer to nature." It's not just about reducing weight but also about simplifying gear and improvising to manage without certain items, which is particularly useful for long-distance hiking over several months. You could think of it as an outdoor version of minimalism. For instance, cutting all tags off to save even a gram or wearing underwear in various ways to extend usage (although in reality, people often don’t change due to lack of social interactions). With this mindset, you can walk in nature for months with a backpack as small as Ash's. Generally, if the base weight of your gear is below 4.5kg, it's considered UL, though I personally think that in modern times, this benchmark isn’t as crucial. Due to various advancements, I feel that a base weight below 3kg is more in line with true UL.)

Ash's Gear

As of 2024, lightweight and simple gear is easily accessible, and information is widely shared. This makes it much easier to embark on long-distance hikes with gear similar to Ash’s.

I searched for websites that realistically analyze Ash's gear but only found this image. The fact that he has a mosquito coil suggests that there are mosquitoes in the Pokémon world...

Ash and his friends always wear the same outfits because they don’t carry spare clothes, except for underwear.

Apart from the items shown in this image, I think Ash's backpack likely contains:

・Sleeping bag:

Pokémon characters are often depicted sleeping near a campfire with just a sleeping bag. While this might not be practical in rainy Japan, it’s more feasible in the dry regions of the western U.S., a practice known as cowboy camping. The setting of the original Pokémon anime resembles America, featuring places like Grand Canyon and Hollywood.

I think bivy camping is more realistic in Japan because I dislike bugs. I often sleep in a Terranova waterproof bivy cover with a mosquito net.

・Rain gear:

Essential for both mountaineering and long-distance hiking. According to UL hiking theory, a poncho tarp that doubles as rain gear and shelter is ideal. However, Ash is seen wearing a front-opening, long raincoat with sleeves. Perhaps he has a separate tarp or uses the raincoat as a shelter—this might just be an animation choice.

・Other gear:

If he’s crossing snowy mountains, he probably doesn’t carry extra clothes. In reality, thorough preparation is necessary. Since he eats instant noodles, he must have equipment for carrying water and boiling it, as well as utensils. These days, super lightweight cooking gear is relatively inexpensive. After joining Brock, they likely share gear.

Other essentials: Light, map, compass, fire starter, and water purifier. Ash might sleep without a mat, but in reality, most of us need one.

The presence of Pokémon and Pokémon Centers in the anime world likely plays a significant role. Trainers probably receive subsidies, allowing them to stay at Pokémon Centers cheaply. With a relatively mild climate and regular food and water supplies, Ash’s gear setup isn’t vastly different from what we could use today for a similar journey.

Long Trails

Even with lightweight, compact gear, some might wonder where they can go on a journey like Ash’s. Do you have to go to America?

With the recent rise in popularity of hiking and long-distance hiking, many trails and courses have been developed in Japan. Long trails exist throughout Japan.

Many have heard of the Shikoku Pilgrimage, but there are long trails near you, too. Why not check them out? Even if you don’t walk long distances at once, you can enjoy them on day trips.

So, this blog was about how Ash’s journey is surprisingly realistic and doable today. Although, taking such a long break might still be a challenge in modern times. Thank you for reading this far!

(Recently, I was going to write about my week-long journey on the Shikoku Pilgrimage, but it got too lengthy, so I’ll save it for another time. Note: Camping is generally illegal in Japan. Collect information about places where it’s allowed and seek permission whenever possible. Especially on long trails, be considerate of the local communities. I met many foreigners on the Shikoku Pilgrimage, and those who tried camping said the police approached them (2 out of 2 I talked to). Communication and gathering information are key. You’ll probably come across regularly updated guidebooks. The pilgrimage is more cultural than natural, but many foreigners experiencing Japan for the first time choose it, so it might be a good recommendation for them.)
